Muthupettai Somu Bhaskar, born on September 13, 1957, is an Indian actor renowned for his appearances in Tamil films. His journey in the film industry began in 1987 when he debuted in a small role in the film “Thirumathi Oru Vegumathi.” However, during the 1990s, he mainly played minor or small roles in various films. It was only in 2004, with “Engal Anna,” that he finally achieved a significant breakthrough, establishing himself as a regular and widely recognized supporting and comedy actor in Tamil cinema.
Besides acting, Bhaskar is also a skilled dubbing artist and an occasional playback singer. His notable performances include roles in popular series like “Chinna Papa Periya Papa” (2000), “Selvi” (2005), and “Arasi” (2007). His talent earned him the accolade of Best Character Artiste for his role in “Mozhi” (2007) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in “8 Thottakkal” (2017).
Bhaskar’s journey into the entertainment world began as a theatre artist and dubbing artist for Telugu films dubbed into Tamil. He also contributed as a dubbing artist for English-language films on Sun TV. His career trajectory included working in All India Radio and Doordarshan. Before pursuing acting, he had various occupations, including a stint as an LIC agent and employment at a toothpaste company.
In addition to his film and television work, Bhaskar has a family connection to the industry. His elder sister, Hemamalini, is also a dubbing artist. Furthermore, his daughter, Ishwarya, has followed in his footsteps as a dubbing artist for leading actresses in the Tamil film industry. His son, Aadithya Bhaskar, made his acting debut by portraying the younger version of Vijay Sethupathi’s character in the film “96” (2018).
