Theatre“Thamizhan” is a 2002 Indian Tamil-language courtroom drama film directed by debutant Majith and produced by G. Venkateswaran. The movie features Vijay and marks the debut of Priyanka Chopra in Tamil cinema, her only Tamil film to date. The supporting cast includes Revathi, Nassar, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Vivek. The film’s music was composed by D. Imman. The storyline revolves around Surya, a carefree individual who evolves into an upright lawyer fighting corruption and working towards making Indian law accessible to the common people. The film was released on April 12, 2002, receiving mixed reviews but achieving commercial success at the box office. Its satellite rights were also acquired by Sun TV at a good price.
The plot follows Surya, initially portrayed as a jovial and confrontational individual who falls in love with Priya. His brother-in-law, Sakthivel, advises him to work under the tutelage of senior lawyer Lakshminarayanan. Surya transforms into a principled lawyer who endeavors to address legal issues through the proper channels. Tragedy strikes when Sakthivel is killed while fighting for justice against a corrupt figure, GK. Motivated by a desire to educate the common people about their legal rights and the fundamentals of Indian law, Surya emerges as a hero in the eyes of the Indian public.
Throughout the film, Surya takes on GK, who operates a corrupt dairy factory and faces legal consequences for food safety violations. He also seeks justice for his sister, Jaya, who meets an unfortunate end at the hands of GK’s henchmen. Despite facing arrests, beatings, and manipulation by corrupt law enforcement, Surya perseveres. He is summoned to court and fights for justice, proposing significant reforms in India’s judicial system. After his release, Surya confronts GK and encourages him to reform before facing punishment. The film concludes with Surya being honored by the President of India, realizing his dream of making legal knowledge accessible to all.
