Tamizh moves into a squatty house with his mother and his wife Yamuna. While he searches for work, Tamizh leaves them with his buddy Kumaran. Though impressed by his résumé, all the employers are reluctant to provide him a position because of incidents from his previous employment. Tamizh, in a state of desperation, works at a roadside biriyani business. After becoming wasted, he spends the night at home, and flashbacks begin.
Five years prior, Tamizh, who was a college student, Kumaran, and Aravind, Tamizh’s cousin, were close friends. Tamizh’s mother gives him instructions one day to attend a pooja (blessing ceremony) at the temple. There, he meets and falls in love with Hema, a student studying architecture who is Anglo-Indian. Aravind is left out by Tamizh and Kumaran because they believe that his superior appearance will make it harder for them to approach the girls. After Tamizh begins to court her, the two finally fall in love; in the meantime, Tamizh’s neighbor Revathi and Kumaran also experience romantic feelings. Without informing Aravind and Tamizh’s father Vijayraghavan, Tamizh, Hema, Kumaran, and Hema’s friend Revathi take a trip to Darjeeling for their first anniversary.
