Story:

“Uttama Villain,” a 2015 Indian Tamil comedy-drama directed by Ramesh Aravind and written by Kamal Haasan, follows the journey of Superstar Manoranjan (Kamal Haasan), a film icon grappling with brain cancer and seeking redemption. He enlists his mentor, director Margadarisi (K. Balachander), to helm his final project, merging a folklore comedy with personal reconciliation.

Amidst personal turmoil involving an estranged son, an unknown daughter, and an extramarital affair, Manoranjan strives to leave a lasting cinematic legacy. The film explores intricate family dynamics, redemption, and the protagonist’s quest for artistic fulfillment, unfolding in two timelines—the 21st century and the 8th century, blurring reality and fiction.

Produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Thirupathi Brothers Film Media, the film faced delays due to extensive visual effects. The ensemble cast includes K. Viswanath, Jayaram, Andrea Jeremiah, Pooja Kumar, Nassar, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and Urvashi.

Ghibran’s soundtrack, blending traditional tunes with orchestral backgrounds, received acclaim. Controversies, plagiarism allegations, protests, and financial disputes surrounded the film, impacting its delayed release.

Despite challenges, “Uttama Villain” received positive reviews for its meta-narrative, storytelling, and Kamal Haasan’s dual role. Critics praised its unique style, emotional depth, and the blend of subtlety with slapstick. The film, while facing controversies, showcased Haasan’s prowess. At the box office, the delayed release affected performance, yet it collected ₹85,39,514 from 170 shows in Chennai.
