Manobala, also known by his birth name Balachander, was a versatile Indian actor, film producer, director, comedian, and YouTuber renowned for his supporting roles in Tamil-language films. With a career spanning almost four decades, he was admired for his unique body language, intonation, and dialogue delivery.
Born in a village near Nagercoil, Manobala pursued his primary education in Bangalore and Thirukattupalli before attending the Government College of Fine Arts. It was during this time that he adopted the pen name “Manobala” and explored his interests in writing, Bharatanatyam, and the veena.
He started his Tamil cinema journey in the early 1970s and gained a foothold as an assistant director in Bharathiraja’s film Puthiya Vaarpugal (1979) through Kamal Haasan’s recommendation. Manobala then made his directorial debut with Agaya Gangai (1982), followed by the successful Pillai Nila (1985).
Throughout his career as a director, he received critical acclaim for films like Oorkavalan (1987), En Purushanthaan Enakku Mattumthaan (1989), and Dhoorathu Pachai (1987). Working with acclaimed actors like Vijayakanth, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Karthik, Manobala expanded his repertoire by directing 24 films, including a Bollywood movie, Mera Pati Sirf Mera Hai (1990), and television serials.
In the 2000s, he transitioned to focus on acting and appeared in over 700 films, often in minor comedic roles alongside renowned comedians Vadivelu and Vivek. His notable comic performances include films like Ice, Nanban, Chandramukhi, Pithamagan, Thamizh Padam, Kavalai Vendam, Kalakalappu, Siruthai, Alex Pandian, Aranmanai, Aambala, and Yaaradi Nee Mohini.
Manobala ventured into film production with H. Vinoth’s Sathuranga Vettai and received recognition for his efforts, winning the Best Debut Film Producer award at the South Indian International Movie Awards.
Besides his work in the film industry, Manobala embraced new media by launching a YouTube channel called “Waste Paper,” where he conducted interviews with directors and actors. In 2022, he received a doctorate degree from the South Western American University and was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Global Achievers Council. Additionally, he participated as a contestant in the reality television show Cooku with Comali in 2022.
