Story:

Mahanati, which means “The great actress,” is a 2018 Telugu-language biographical drama film that is based on the life of Savitri, the actress. Produced by Priyanka Dutt under the banners of Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinema, it is written and directed by Nag Ashwin.

In this film, Dulquer Salmaan (in his Telugu debut) plays Savitri’s husband Gemini Ganesan, while Keerthy Suresh[a] plays Savitri. In addition to Samantha Akkineni and Vijay Deverakonda, supporting roles in the movie are played by Rajendra Prasad, Prakash Raj, and Bhanupriya. Among those who make guest appearances are Mohan Babu and Naga Chaitanya.

Plot:Nissankara Savitri, a well-known actress from the past, is discovered unconscious in Bangalore in 1980 by her son. She stays in the hospital and is unconscious for a year. The media covers the incident, but nobody knows anything about Savitri’s early life or whereabouts.

A stuttering journalist named Madhuravani and a photographer named Vijay Anthony are assigned to write an article about her circumstances. In a letter that Savitri left behind, Madhuravani requests that she take her son to see “Shankarayya.”

Even after receiving permission from her editor to stop writing the memoir, Madhuravani persists in her investigation in an odd way. She enters Savitri’s home undetected and listens in as her aunt talks about her early years.

Much to Subadrama’s dismay, her sister Durgamba and her husband K.V. Chowdhary accept her and her daughter Nissankara Savitri in 1942 after Subadrama becomes widowed. As she gets older, Savitri learns to dance well and starts performing in plays with her friend Susheela to make money for Chowdhary. Dramatic attendance declines due to the growing popularity of movies, causing Chowdhary to suffer enormous losses. Although she is too young and cannot speak Tamil, he attempts to get Savitri to work in the Madras film industry.

But then she meets Ramasamy “Gemini” Ganesan, a worker at the studio who takes her picture for a casting call. A year later, L. V. Prasad casts Savitri in a movie, but she mispronounces the dialogue and gets fired. She does, however, get paid to dance in a scene from the movie Pathala Bhairavi. Her portrayal in that movie facilitates her acquisition of important roles.

Savitri receives an offer to play the role of Ganesan, the actor who used to teach her Tamil. Together, they become famous figures, and Savitri develops feelings for the married Ganesan. They have a disagreement with Savitri’s family after secretly getting married in a temple.

Savitri is convinced to act after marriage by Ganesan and the filmmakers, despite her initial reluctance. She succeeds as an actress in the future. Later on, Savitri gives birth to a boy and a girl, Vijaya Chamundeshwari. At first, Ganesan is supportive of her career; however, he is envious of Savitri because her notoriety eclipses his. He begins drinking, and shares the drink with Savitri when she tries to stop him.

A few women propose that Savitri direct and star in a movie with an all-female cast and crew. Savitri discovers Ganesan in their guesthouse with another woman on the day her film is released. Savitri furiously splits ways with Ganesan, feeling duped. She starts drinking and putting on weight.

In the meantime, her mother passes away, and bad financial choices cause the Income Tax Department to raid her property, which causes her wealth to be lost. After a fight with Vijaya one day over Savitri’s excessive alcohol intake, Savitri faints and unintentionally sets their home on fire. They discover Savitri is a diabetic.

Savitri implores Chowdhary and Vijaya to pardon her as they visit. She loses weight, quits drinking, and gets Vijaya married. She moves into a smaller home with her son and begins doing small-scale acting work. She puts money aside to start a rehab facility.

When she finds out that she still has income tax to pay, she becomes very adamant about not giving up any more cash. The following day, she and her son travel to Bangalore. She calls Ganesan because she’s lost, but she hangs up before saying anything. She drinks alcohol once more out of frustration at both him and at herself before going into a coma.

Through Savitri’s tale, Madhuravani comes to understand her love for Anthony. She interrupts what is ostensibly Anthony’s engagement and speaks confidently without stuttering, only to discover that Anthony also loves her and that it is his sister’s engagement.

While writing Savitri’s memoir, Madhuravani pays Savitri a visit in the hospital. She holds up a photo of her father that she took out of the newspaper archive.

December 1981 marks Savitri’s passing, Shankarayya turns out to be a statue that Savitri thinks of as her father in the end.
