Theatre“Aruvam,” is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language supernatural horror thriller film written and directed by Sai Sekhar. The movie features Siddharth and Catherine Tresa in lead roles, with supporting performances from Kabir Duhan Singh, Madhusudhan Rao, Sathish, Aadukalam Naren, and Manobala. The film’s soundtrack is composed by Sai Thaman, while N. K. Ekambaram and Praveen K. L. take charge of cinematography and editing, respectively. The storyline unfolds with Jyothi, a schoolteacher lacking the sense of smell, who harbors feelings of inadequacy.
One day, Jagannathan, smitten after witnessing Jyothi’s compassionate act of freeing a parakeet, falls in love with her. Despite Jagan’s advances, Jyothi, burdened by her anosmia and tragic past, initially rejects his affections. Jyothi’s life takes a perilous turn when, during a temple visit, a fire incident occurs, and she remains oblivious due to her inability to smell and the loud surroundings. Jagan intervenes, saving her and emphasizing the need for protection.
As mysterious events unfold, a watchman at Jyothi’s school is attacked by an apparition, leading to disruptions and challenges at the school. Amidst these troubles, Jyothi faces a tragic accident, losing her sense of smell. However, during her hospital stay, she regains her olfactory sense and discovers a newfound appreciation for life. The narrative takes a darker turn as individuals connected to Jyothi face brutal, supernatural murders.
Investigations led by Vikram, Sanyasa Murthy’s younger brother, Dinesh, and Daniel uncover a mysterious connection to Jyothi through a strand of hair. Jyothi, falsely accused, faces violence at the hands of Daniel and his associates. In a surprising twist, Jyothi becomes a vessel for a supernatural force, revealing itself as Jagan’s soul seeking revenge. The possessed Jyothi executes Daniel, exposing Jagan’s troubled past as a Food Safety Officer fighting against food adulteration.
Jagan’s past reveals a relentless crusade against food adulteration, leading to mortal wounds inflicted by enemies in his pursuit. Jagan decides to end his life, falling onto a banyan tree. The revelation of Jagan’s soul seeking justice through Jyothi unfolds as the present timeline progresses.
As Jagan’s spirit reveals itself to Jyothi, she grapples with the moral implications of his actions. Jyothi, aware of Jagan’s death, pleads for justice against adulteration but faces indifference. An exorcist enters the scene, trapping Jagan’s soul and instructing Vikram and Dinesh to eliminate Jyothi to prevent further revenge.
Kidnapped by goons hired by Vikram and Dinesh, Jyothi experiences a turning point, realizing the gravity of food adulteration. In a desperate plea, she urges Jagan to take revenge on the villains. Jagan escapes the exorcist’s trap, possessing Jyothi to finally exact vengeance on Vikram, Dinesh, and their accomplices, bringing the tale full circle.
