With the help of his bumbling colleague Yettu Erimalai, Duraisingam, an honest Special Investigation (SI) from Nallur, a small village in Thoothukudi district in southern Tamil Nadu, has a respectable standing in the village alongside his father Soundarapandi. His family business is provision stores, and Singam wants to join it, but he joined the police because Soundarapandi wanted him to. He solves most of the village’s problems through mutual counseling and non-violent means, only using force when necessary, earning the villagers’ respect and affection.
Soundarapandi’s friend and Chennai-based industrialist Mahalingam arrives in the village with his daughters, Divya and Kavya. When Kavya is going to pull a practical joke on her cousin by dressing like a tiger, Singam initially perceives her as a tiger. Singam slaps her by mistake while he’s wandering the village. He apologizes to Kavya just before she takes revenge on Singam. This moves Kavya, who gradually begins to fall in love with him.
Kavya tells Singam she loves him after a few amusing moments. Singam instantly returns Kavya’s affection after initially being shocked. After pressuring an elderly builder into taking his own life, Mayil Vaaganam, a violent criminal from Chennai who engages in extortion and kidnapping, must go to Nallur to sign a provisional bail.
Singam becomes enraged when Mayil sends one of his allies to handle the formalities and insists that Mayil sign the bail in person. Having been humiliated, Mayil travels to Nallur but is unable to exact any retribution on Singam because of the village’s deep love and devotion for him. Mayil Vaaganam uses his connections in politics to get Singam moved to Chennai as a warning. Singam joins the Thiruvanmiyur police station without realizing Mayil had a hand in his transformation.
Mayil’s political power prevents his coworker SI Ravi from taking any action, despite the fact that he despises Mayil for his crimes. Senior Rajendran of Singam works for Mayil and is careful to hide and destroy any proof of Mayil’s criminal activity from the authorities. Rajendran cautions Singam to avoid getting involved in Mayil’s case, and the Commissioner does not assist Singam either because there is no evidence against Mayil.
Singam, unable to confront Mayil in his stronghold, wishes to go back to his village, but Kavya stops him, motivating him to confront Mayil and bring an end to his criminal organization. After being subjected to mental abuse by Mayil, Singam falsely accuses Mayil’s brother Vaikuntam of smuggling alcohol. When Rajendran tries to shield the goons from harm due to his obligations to Mayil, he is stopped in broad daylight by him.
Mayil kidnaps Divya and demands a ransom. Home Minister Ramanathan provides Singam with unanticipated assistance in rescuing her. Singam becomes the ACP of the newly established Anti-Kidnapping Task Force after he successfully tracks Mayil down as the mastermind behind the kidnapping scheme.
After a fight with Soundarapandi back at Nallur, Mahalingam, who had been antagonistic toward Singam, changes his mind and consents to give him Kavya’s hand in marriage. Rajendran and the police commissioner are now on Singam’s side, along with the whole police force. They choose to assist him in battling Mayil.
After killing Mayil’s goons in a hospital confrontation, they start going after everything and everyone connected to Mayil. Mayil begins to exact revenge on everyone who is near Singam. He shoots Kavya, but Singam saves her, and Mayil’s goons hack Ravi to death. Mayil kidnaps the daughter of the Karnataka Home Minister in an attempt to evade the arrest warrant that has been issued for him.
When in reality Mayil is heading to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh to throw the police off their trail, he deceives Singam into believing that he is going to Pondicherry with her. Singam, however, is able to track them down to Gudur, which is close to Nellore, where he saves her and kills Mayil in a confrontation. Following that, he resigns from his position in front of everyone at a thank-you party. Kavya and Singam are seen returning to Nallur. Ramanathan stops him for a moment and offers him an undercover assignment, which he gladly accepts.
