Biography:

Jeff Bridges was born on December 4, 1949, in Los Angeles to actor Lloyd Bridges and actress/writer Dorothy Bridges (née Simpson). He was the youngest of four children, including his actor brother Beau (born 1941), sister Lucinda, and brother Garrett, who tragically died of sudden infant death syndrome in 1948. His maternal grandfather was originally from Liverpool, England.

He grew up in the Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, where he developed a close bond with Beau, who often filled the role of a father figure while their father worked. Bridges graduated from University High School in 1967. At 17, he toured with his father in the stage production Anniversary Waltz, then moved to New York to study acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio. From 1967 to 1975, he also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve in San Luis Obispo, reaching the rank of Boatswain’s Mate Second Class.

Bridges first appeared on screen in an uncredited role in The Company She Keeps (1951), released shortly after his first birthday. As a child, he and Beau occasionally appeared on their father’s series Sea Hunt (1958–1961) and The Lloyd Bridges Show (1962–1963). He later acted alongside his father in The Loner (1965) and appeared in a 1969 episode of Lassie.

His breakthrough came with The Last Picture Show (1971), earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He followed with strong performances in Fat City (1972), The Last American Hero (1973), and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), which brought him another Oscar nomination. In 1976, he starred opposite Jessica Lange in the King Kong remake, a box office hit that won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Throughout the late 1970s, he appeared in Somebody Killed Her Husband (1978), Winter Kills (1979), and The American Success Company (1979). He was also part of Michael Cimino’s Heaven’s Gate (1980), a major box office failure that nearly destroyed United Artists.

In 1982, Bridges took on the role of Kevin Flynn in Disney’s sci-fi film Tron and voiced Prince Lir in the animated The Last Unicorn. That same year, he starred opposite Sally Field in Kiss Me Goodbye. He earned further acclaim for Starman (1984), receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and continued with roles in Against All Odds (1984), Jagged Edge (1985), The Morning After (1986), and Nadine (1987). In 1988, he portrayed automobile innovator Preston Tucker in Tucker: The Man and His Dream.

In the 1990s, Bridges reprised his role from The Last Picture Show in Texasville (1990), starred in The Fisher King (1991), and produced and starred in American Heart (1992), which earned him the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. His role in Fearless (1993) was widely praised, with critics calling it one of his finest performances. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994, the same year he starred in Blown Away. He went on to portray Wild Bill Hickok in Wild Bill (1995) and co-starred in Hidden in America (1996).

Bridges took roles in White Squall (1996), The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), and most memorably played Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski in the Coen brothers’ cult classic The Big Lebowski (1998). He earned his fourth Oscar nomination for The Contender (2000) and later starred in K-Pax (2001), Seabiscuit (2003), and Tideland (2005).

He continued diversifying his career, hosting VH1’s Top 100 Greatest Albums of Rock and Roll and narrating several documentaries. He voiced Big Z in Surf’s Up (2007) and appeared in commercials for Hyundai and Duracell.

In 2008, he played the villain Obadiah Stane in Iron Man and reprised Kevin Flynn in Tron: Legacy (2010). His performance as a troubled country singer in Crazy Heart (2009) earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. He then starred in True Grit (2010), receiving his sixth Oscar nomination.

Later roles included R.I.P.D. (2013), The Giver (2014), Seventh Son (2014), and Hell or High Water (2016), which earned him his seventh Oscar nomination. He acted in Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), Bad Times at the El Royale (2018), and began starring in the FX drama The Old Man in 2022, a role that brought him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. In 2019, he was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and in 2024 received the Chaplin Gala Award. That same year, it was announced he would reprise Kevin Flynn in Tron: Ares.

In June 2024, Bridges was cast as God in the comedy Carnival: At the End of Days.

On a personal note, Bridges and his siblings inherited their family’s Malibu home, which was destroyed in the January 2025 Palisades Fire. He previously dated Candy Clark after meeting on the set of Fat City (1972). In 1977, he married Susan Geston, whom he met while filming Rancho Deluxe. Together, they have three daughters, born in 1981, 1983, and 1985.
