TheatreThe 2008 Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy film, “Yaaradi Nee Mohini” directed by Mithran Jawahar in his debut, is a remake of the 2007 Telugu hit “Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule” by Selvaraghavan. Starring Dhanush and Nayanthara in lead roles, with supporting performances by Karthik Kumar, Raghuvaran, Telugu film director K. Vishwanath, Karunas, and Saranya Mohan, the film offers a unique twist in its climax. Yuvan Shankar Raja provided the musical score, and the title is inspired by a song from the 1958 film “Uthama Puthiran.”
Released on April 4, 2008, the film achieved significant success at the box office, ranking among the top-grossing Tamil films of the year. The story revolves around Vasudevan, a youth from a middle-class family struggling to secure employment due to his limited English skills and educational qualifications. Despite the success of his friends, Vasu faces constant criticism from his teacher father for his perceived irresponsibility.
Vasu’s life takes a turn when he encounters Keerthi, a woman working in a software solutions firm, and falls in love with her. Despite securing a job at the same firm, Vasu’s love is unrequited as Keerthi reveals her pre-arranged marriage to her uncle’s son. Devastated, Vasu returns to India, leading to a tragic chain of events including his father’s death.
In an attempt to lift Vasu’s spirits, his friend Cheenu invites him to his family house. Surprisingly, Keerthi, revealed to be Cheenu’s fiancée, adds complexity to their relationships. The film takes unexpected turns as Keerthi realizes her love for Vasu, leading to a dramatic revelation during Cheenu and Keerthi’s wedding. Vasu, facing expulsion from the family, eventually finds solace with Cheenu’s grandmother.
Despite initial resistance from Cheenu’s grandfather, the film concludes with Vasu and Keerthi overcoming challenges, confessing their love, and living happily together. “Yaaradi Nee Mohini” weaves a tale of love, sacrifice, and family dynamics in a captivating manner.
