The film features Rajinikanth, Anushka Shetty, Sonakshi Sinha, and Jagapathi Babu in lead roles, with supporting performances by Santhanam and Karunakaran. The story revolves around a small village named Solaiyur and its iconic dam, which is under threat from a corrupt politician, MP Nagabooshan, who plans to demolish the dam for financial gain. When an honest dam inspector is murdered, he hides an important inspection report, leading to a quest to find the descendant of the dam’s noble builder, Raja Lingeswaran, who alone can open an abandoned temple containing the report.
Lakshmi, Karunakara’s granddaughter, and a journalist embarks on a journey to locate the descendant and stumbles upon Lingaa, a witty and crafty thief. Initially reluctant, Lingaa is coerced into accompanying Lakshmi to Solaiyur, where he is surprisingly welcomed by the villagers. As the story unfolds, Lingaa discovers the true history of his grandfather, Raja Lingeswaran, who constructed the dam to benefit the village and fought against British oppression. This revelation inspires Lingaa to mend his ways and join forces with Karunakara and Lakshmi to save the dam from destruction by Nagabooshan, who is ultimately exposed and defeated. The film ends with Lingaa choosing to become a better person and leaving the village with Lakshmi, supported by the police due to his heroic actions.
The film showcases a tale of redemption, sacrifice, and the preservation of a cherished symbol of hope for a community. It draws upon themes of heritage, honor, and the power of one’s actions to bring about positive change. Rajinikanth’s performance and A. R. Rahman’s music received praise, while the film faced criticism for its screenplay, climax, and length. “Lingaa” is a story of transformation and the triumph of good over greed, set against the backdrop of a rural Indian village.
