Theatre“Aranmanai 2,” is a 2016 Indian Tamil-language comedy horror film crafted by Sundar C, who also stars in the movie alongside Siddharth, Trisha, Hansika Motwani, Poonam Bajwa, Soori, Kovai Sarala, Manobala, Chitra Lakshmanan, Radharavi, and Vaibhav Reddy. This film serves as a sequel to the 2014 Tamil blockbuster “Aranmanai” and is the second installment in the Aranmanai film series. Released on January 29, 2016, the narrative revolves around Murali (Siddharth) returning to his ancestral home with fiancée Anitha (Trisha) after his father falls into a coma under mysterious circumstances, unveiling dark family secrets with Ravi (Sundar C).
The story begins with the Amman statue, initially guarding the village against evil spirits, being moved underground during a temple renovation. In a nearby graveyard, tantric practitioners take advantage of the dormant Amman to awaken evil spirits for black magic. Unintentionally releasing a demonic entity during their ritual, the evil spirit infiltrates the village, escaping into the titular palace. Despite the village mendicant’s warnings, the spirit enters unnoticed. That night, the spirit attacks the palace owner, inducing a coma. Ramesh, his wife Sandhya, and son Suresh, along with Murali, Anitha, and family friend Devadas, arrive to care for the ailing owner.
Strange occurrences unfold as the family driver is killed, Suresh acts irrationally, and Murali witnesses paranormal events involving his father. Anitha calls her brother, Ravi, for assistance, triggering a series of events. Ravi, suspecting foul play, sets up cameras, revealing a malevolent spirit causing chaos. Murali identifies the spirit as Maya, his long-lost younger sister.
Maya’s backstory unfolds – loved by the family, she eloped before her marriage, leading to disgrace and her subsequent disappearance. Ravi discovers Maya’s tragic fate: betrayed, her husband murdered, and forced to drink poison by her family. Seeking revenge, Maya vows to end her family’s male line, with Murali as her prime target. As Ravi and Manju, a family nurse, investigate, they find that Maya has possessed Anitha.
The narrative intensifies as Anitha, now possessed, wreaks havoc, attempting to kill family members. Ravi and Manju seek help from a priest near the Kerala border. The priest, initially reluctant due to a recent heart attack, ultimately agrees to perform a pooja. Discovering that Maya has possessed Anitha, Ravi resolves to find Maya’s corpse.
In a gripping climax, the family devises a plan to distract Anitha while collecting her blood and marking her with holy ink. The goal is to release Maya’s grip on Anitha. Despite the challenges, the priest, Ravi, and Murali execute a risky plan to exorcise the spirit. In a final showdown at the village temple’s Mariamman Pooja, Mariamman intervenes to prevent Maya from harming Murali and Suresh. The climax sees Maya’s spirit entering a doll, biding time for a potential return.
As the film concludes, Murali, Suresh, and Anitha reunite, while Ravi and Manju also find their way back to each other. The caretakers assume control of the Aranmanai as Maya’s spirit lingers in a doll, hinting at the potential for future haunting.
