Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam (20 September 1954 – 7 December 2013) was a popular Indian actor, comedian, and film director known for his work in Telugu cinema. He was widely recognized as one of the highest-paid and leading comedians in the Telugu film industry. In several popular television shows, Dharmavarapu gained a large fan following for his unique style, dialogue modulation, and hosting skills.
Having a close association with Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Dharmavarapu was a member of the Indian National Congress and was chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Cultural Association. He received two state Nandi Awards for Best Male Comedian for his notable performances in “Alasyam Amrutham” (2010) and “Yagnam” (2004).
Born in Komminenivaripalem, Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, Dharmavarapu belonged to a Telugu Brahmin family. Initially working as a government employee, he rose to fame with the comedy serial “Anando Brahma,” which he both acted in and directed. The show aired on Doordarshan in the 1980s and became a sensation, transforming the landscape of entertainment on television.
Dharmavarapu debuted in films with Jayammu Nischayammu Raa in 1989, directed by Jandhyala. He earned a reputation for his comedic roles and impeccable dialogue delivery. He went on to act in various films alongside renowned actors such as Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Venkatesh, Mahesh Babu, Pawan Kalyan, Prabhas, Jr. NTR, Ram Charan, Allu Arjun, and Ravi Teja. He also directed the Telugu film “Thokaleni Pitta,” starring Naresh in the lead role and produced by Kona Venkat.
Dharmavarapu had a close relationship with the late Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and actively participated in the Congress party. He also hosted a political satire program called “Ding Dong” on Sakshi TV 2011. Unfortunately, Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam passed away on 7 December 2013, leaving a significant legacy in the Telugu film industry and television.
