Theatre“Katha Screenplay Darsakatvam Appalaraju” a 2011 Indian Telugu-language comedy film, is the brainchild of acclaimed writer and director Ram Gopal Varma. The film stars Sunil and Swati Reddy in leading roles, supported by Brahmanandam and Kota Srinivasa Rao, with Sudhakar Reddy as the cinematographer and Koti composing the music.
The protagonist, Appalaraju, a film enthusiast, frequents the Rambha Theatre in Amalapuram, questioning the quality of films being produced. Driven by a deep-seated ambition to surpass established directors, he ventures to Hyderabad with his script, Nayaki. At an audio release event, he encounters producer Rakhee and creative head Pushpanand, who, despite suggesting alterations, face Appalaraju’s adamant refusal to modify a single word.
Rakhee proposes convincing the industry’s top heroine, Kanishka, as her involvement could attract financiers. Appalaraju manages to persuade Kanishka, leading to a meeting with Data Base to secure funding. To enhance the film’s prospects, they seek the involvement of leading hero Babu Garu. However, conflicts arise, leading to Babu Garu’s departure and Data Base retracting financial support. Turning to rowdy financier Srisailam Anna, they agree to his condition of using only his lyrics.
Fortune smiles as Kanishka convinces another top hero, KT, to join the project. With Rahman Sharma composing tunes for Srisailam Anna’s lyrics, KT advocates for an item number to cater to mass audiences. Reluctantly, Appalaraju agrees. Post-production concludes, and as the film’s release approaches, they invite media for favorable reviews.
Unexpectedly, Babu Garu orchestrates a media backlash, leaving the producers scrambling for a distributor. Ontikannu Gavarraju demands promotional changes but faces Appalaraju’s refusal. After a reluctant agreement, Gavarraju later cheats the producers, leading them back to Data Base for distribution. KT insists on releasing the film alongside Babu Garu’s “Pranam Teesta” during Sankranti season.
Facing opposition from all fronts, Babu Garu is determined to halt the film’s release. Director Y Venkat suggests burning the negatives, but a mistake leads to the burning of another film’s negative. Surprisingly, “Nayaki” enjoys a smooth release and becomes a massive hit, winning awards across categories. Despite Appalaraju’s initial disappointment with the deviation from his tragic script, he jubilantly dances alongside the crew during the award celebration. The film concludes with Appalaraju and Krishna dancing to the remix of the item song featured in the film.
