Theatre2009 saw the release of the Telugu-language action comedy Sankham (transl. Conch), which was directed by Siva and co-produced by Shiva Rama Krishna and J Bhagavan and J Pulla Rao under the Sri Balaji Cine Media banner. S. Thaman wrote the music for the film, which starred Gopichand, Trisha, and Sathyaraj.
The movie centres on Chandu, an NRI who lives in Australia with his friend and uncle. After Mahalakshmi, Chandu’s girlfriend, is forcibly brought to India by her violent family, he goes there to marry her but is given a mission that will ultimately drag him into a long-standing conflict with the rival village and reveal his true identity.
The movie opened in theatres on September 11, 2009. The movie was also dubbed and released in Tamil as Sivappu Saamy (transl. Red God), Bhojpuri as Baghi Balma (transl. Rebellious Lover), and Hindi as Phir Ek Most Wanted (transl. Again a Most Wanted) in 2010. Later, it was remade as Kothin Protishodh in Bangladeshi Bengali, starring Uzzal, Apu Biswas, and Shakib Khan.
Chandu is a rich, rough youth brought up by his uncle Krishna Rao in Australia. Mahalakshmi stays in Australia along with her uncle Pichaiah, who runs a restaurant. Chandu is fond of martial arts, but he never gets a chance to exhibit them in real situations. Mahalakshmi is another martial arts freak. After a few misunderstandings, they fall in love. One day, Mahalakshmi is forced to come back to her hometown in Rayalaseema. Chandu comes in search of her. Meanwhile, Sivaiah and his archenemy, Mahalakshmi’s father Pashupati are the rich leaders of two neighboring villages, in Rayalaseema. They have longtime enmity. Chandu comes to Mahalakshmi’s village and asks her hand in marriage. Though Pashupati’s sister opposes this, Pashupati agrees based on one condition, that Chandu must escort his brother from railway station to home safely. The brother Rajappa , has been on a 23-year self-imposed exile from the district, due to his life being under threat of Sivaiah and his entire village. Chandu agrees and does so, beating 30 men of Siviah on the way.
Even though Pashupati’s sister is against it, Pashupati agrees—as long as Chandu makes sure his brother gets home safely from the train station. Rajappa, the brother, has been living in self-imposed exile from the district for the past 23 years because Sivaiah and his entire village are threatening to take his life. In doing so, Chandu defeats thirty of Siviah’s men. Then Siviah challenges Chandu to visit his home by himself. He is severely beaten by Sivaiah’s men who he has placed at the door of the house while he is strolling through his home. Upon recognising Chandu’s face, Sivaiah hurried him to the hospital, where he was miraculously saved. Chandu’s uncle was informed of the incident and took a plane to India.
When Uncle Krishna Rao sees Chandu with Siviah, he is startled and tells Chandu about his parents. In reality, Siviah is Chandu’s father. There was a major dispute between the villages 23 years ago over the sharing of water, which resulted in numerous deaths from fighting. Siviah ignores his wife’s pleas for him to end the fight. She gives birth to twins, but one of the children and her parents perish in a car bomb right in front of her. This forces her to take Chandu and return to her home country. Two years later, she changes her mind and goes to see Siviah. Just when Siviah is about to make amends, Rajappa ambushes him and murders his wife in front of him, defying his pleas. He sent Chandu with the uncle, and ever since, he has covered all of his costs. After that, Chandu becomes Siviah’s heir, and the rest of the tale tells how he vanquishes Pasupati and his brothers.
