Theatre“Maska,” a 2009 Indian Telugu-language romantic action comedy film, directed by B. Gopal, features a stellar cast including Ram, Hansika Motwani, Sheela, and Sunil. The film’s cinematic journey commenced on January 14, 2009, when it was released with an extensive reach of 300 prints in 550 theaters. Notably, it transcended regional borders, finding its way into Bengali cinema with adaptations like “Onnorokom Bhalobasha” in 2012 and “Hero 420” in 2016, both serving as romantic offerings for Valentine’s Day.
The film’s Hindi dubbed version, titled “Phool Aur Kante,” ventured into wider audiences, although it garnered an average response at the box office. The narrative unfolds around Krish (Ram), a carefree individual living with his brother (Naresh) and sister-in-law (Jhansi). His initial pursuit involves winning the heart of Manju (Sheela), the daughter of Simhachalam (Mukesh Rishi), solely driven by the ambition to amass wealth through marriage.
Krish, however, fabricates a love story with Meenakshi, aka Meenu (Hansika Motwani), to manipulate Manju’s emotions. Surprisingly, as the plot thickens, Krish discovers genuine affection for Meenu and falls deeply in love with her. Meanwhile, Simhachalam and Shinde (Pradeep Rawat) engage in a political rivalry during a presidential election in Delhi, with Shinde attempting to expose Simhachalam’s personal life for political gain.
Shinde’s pursuit leads to the revelation of Simhachalam’s other family, including his wife Seetha and daughter residing in Hyderabad. Complications arise as Simhachalam arranges Manju’s marriage to Krish, oblivious to Krish’s love for Meenu. The tension escalates when Manju, armed with a gun, confronts Meenu. The unexpected twist unfolds as Manju relinquishes Krish to Meenu, exposing Meenu as Simhachalam’s illegitimate daughter and Manju’s sister.
The emotional climax sees Simhachalam, Krish, and Shinde resolving familial conflicts, prompting Meenu and Manju to implore their father to embrace happiness over political pursuits. Simhachalam concedes the election to Shinde, paving the way for Krish and Meenu’s union and a contented life for Manju. The musical dimension of “Maska” was unveiled at a grand event held at Rama Naidu studios on December 25, 2008.
The film’s music launch featured luminaries such as Dasari and D Suresh Babu, with the audio CD being officially inaugurated. Box office reports reflected the film’s commercial success, with an impressive collection of Rs 2.25 crores on its opening day and a noteworthy Rs. 10 crores in its inaugural week in theaters. This marked a significant milestone in Ram’s career, establishing him as an emerging star. “Maska” not only garnered attention for its compelling storyline but also contributed to Ram’s ascent in the industry, solidifying its status as one of the highest-grossing films of the year according to industry sources.
