Vijayakumar’s cinema career began in 1961 as a child actor in the film Sri Valli. In the film Sri Valli, starring Sivaji Ganesan and Padmini, Vijayakumar played the small Lord Murugan. Though he did not receive many offers, he was meant to play Lord Murugan in Kandhan Karunai (1967), but Sivakumar played that role instead. Vijayakumar played one of the Lords arrested by Surapadman in a minor role. Ponnukku Thanga Manasu, directed by Devaraj-Mohan, gave Vijayakumar his first break in 1973.Sivakumar was the film’s other hero. Ponnuku Thanga Manasu’s achievement secured him a permanent place in Tamil film. In the 1970s, Vijayakumar was a well-known actor who appeared in films with A-list talent like Kamal Haasan in Neeya? (1979), M. G. Ramachandran in Indru Pol Endrum Vaazhga (1977), and Sivaji Ganesan in Dheepam (1977). While playing the lead in movies like Aval Oru Thodar Kathai (1974), Madhura Geetham (1977), and Azhage Unnai Aarathikkiren (1979), Vijayakumar, who was well-known as a supporting actor, also performed in the 1970s.
Early in the 1980s, Vijayakumar continued to perform in supporting parts. Vijayakumar’s second inning, which followed a brief dip, occurred in 1988 with Mani Ratnam’s Agni Natchathiram (1988), in which he portrayed the father of Prabhu and Karthik. Two half brothers battle for their father’s affection and belongings in the movie. In the 1990s, Vijayakumar regularly played father figures in films like Baashha (1995) and Nattamai (1994). At the same period, Vijayakumar co-starred alongside Bharathiraaja in acclaimed movies like Kizhakku Cheemayile (1993) and Anthimanthaarai (1996). The latter brought him within one vote of taking home the National Film Award for Best Actor. Throughout the 2000s, Vijayakumar kept playing older characters; eventually, the actor appeared in more grandfather roles. The actor has prioritized television serials over the past few years and cut back on his film obligations. Vijayakumar has appeared in more than 400 movies, mostly in Tamil but also briefly in Telugu.
