TheatrePrithviraj Productions and Magic Frames produced the 2019 Indian Malayalam-language satire comedy drama film Driving Licence, which was written by Sachy and directed by Lal Jr. Suraj Venjaramood and Prithviraj Sukumaran are the main actors. The plot centers on movie star Hareendran, who urgently needs a driver’s license, and his devoted admirer, Motor Vehicle Inspector Kuruvila Joseph, who agrees to deliver it illegally. However, their meeting does not go as planned; rather, a feud between them arises that negatively impacts both their personal and professional lives.
The driving license was made available in India on December 20, 2019, and abroad on December 25 of the same year. The movie was a big triumph at the box office and received favorable reviews from reviewers. Later, the movie was recreated in Hindi as Selfiee, with Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi playing the main parts.
Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) Kuruvilla Joseph of Kakkanad RTO is a huge admirer of Malayalam actor Hareendran. Due to his wife’s condition, Hareendran is getting set to travel to the United States, which will postpone the completion of his picture, The Great Dictator, which has already gone over budget. The crew discovers that Hareendran’s driver’s license, which must be presented to obtain clearance, is gone as the climax is about to be filmed on Indian Navy-leased property. Since the movie needs to be finished as soon as possible, the producer is furious.
Since it would take time to issue a new license, Hareendran is unable to apply for a duplicate license due to a clerical error that occurred during the move between RTO facilities. In order to expedite the process, Kuruvila talks with Peringodan, a politician friend of Hareendran’s. Without Hareendran even showing up for the test, Kuruvila consents to illegally provide the license. In exchange, he calls Hareendran to the RTO so they can meet face-to-face and provide documentation in the event of an investigation. Bhadran, Hareendran’s professional opponent, is preparing to use occultism to stifle Hareendran’s competition.
Even though he realises going to the RTO might give away clues for his visit, Hareendran hesitatingly agrees, hoping that an unadvertised visit calls for less visibility. On his arrival, he sees TV channels surrounding the premises, amidst, a peon gives a misinformation to a reporter that Hareendran, an avid driver, has been driving without a licence. The news spreads, and an infuriated Hareendran scolds Kuruvila in front of his son and superiors for the leak and leaves. Angered, Kuruvila informs reporters that Hareendran was arrogant and wanted a licence without going through the normal procedures.
The chairman of Bhadran’s fan community, Saheer, plans a hit-and-run attack on Kuruvila to exacerbate the situation, further harming Hareendran’s already damaged reputation. Kuruvila’s son sustains a head injury when a masked gang throws stones at his home at midnight. Kuruvila thinks it’s the men of Hareendran. At the producer’s persuasion, Hareendran grudgingly cancels his trip to the United States. Kuruvila’s suspicions are confirmed when an irate Hareendran threatens him over the phone as he is hurrying his son to the hospital.
Kuruvila and his wife accuse Hareendran during a police investigation, but Hareendran is not prosecuted since his involvement was not proven. Kuruvila and his family stage a Satyagraha in front of Hareendran’s house to protest it, and admirers and the media gather there as well. A drunk named Agasthi tries to meet Hareendran in the middle but is sent away. Addressing media, Hareendran states that Kuruvila is a crazy fan and a kind of stalker who finds gratification by being a part in his idol’s life through disruption. He shows Kuruvila’s fan messages as evidence and announces that he has decided to attend the test in the supervision of Kuruvila.
A direct question-answer session with Kuruvila takes the place of the computer-based test, and Hareendran obtains permission for an open test that may be watched by the media and broadcast live. Hareendran passes the learner’s test despite Kuruvila’s challenging and odd questions. Kuruvila’s son is bullied by Hareendran’s fan-boys in school. With that, Kuruvila decides not to send him school until Hareendran has failed and is determined to fail him using maximum discretion. Meanwhile, Hareendran’s wife requires a surgery, and a flight is charted to reach there as soon as the test is completed.
Hareendran passes the “H test” with ease on the day of the practical assessment, but Kuruvila points out his minor errors and fails him. His supervisor overturns the decision, and Hareendran passes it. Hareendran is forced to wait until midday for the follow-up “road test” by Kuruvila. He delays the test for two days at midday, which coincides with Hareendran’s wife’s surgery day. In front of the media and admirers, Hareendran declares that he would never drive again since Kuruvila has completely abused his position of authority. If this causes him any more problems in his life, he will also give up acting. Kuruvila is lynched by angry supporters, but Hareendran protects him and leaves the scene.
They resolve the misunderstandings on the way. Kuruvila and his family are brought to Hareendran’s home. Two days later, Hareendran talks to the media about their reunion before departing for the airport. An inebriated Agasthi steps in, hands him a laminated copy of his misplaced license, and claims to have been attempting to contact him ever since. “I can drive now, right?” Hareendran asks the throng. I got my driver’s license. Then he takes off in his vehicle.
