TheatreThe 2021 American epic space opera film Dune (also known on-screen as Dune: Part One) was directed and co-produced by Denis Villeneuve, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. It is part one of a two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel. The movie is set in the far future and follows Paul Atreides as his family, the aristocratic House Atreides, is thrown into a conflict over the hostile and lethal desert planet Arrakis.
After John Harrison’s 2000 television miniseries and David Lynch’s 1984 film, this is the third Dune adaptation. Following Paramount Pictures’ failed attempt to create a new adaptation, Legendary Pictures purchased the film and television rights to Dune in 2016, and in February 2017, Villeneuve agreed to serve as director. Only the first movie’s production contracts were obtained; a sequel would only be made if the first movie was a hit. From March to July 2019, principal photography was conducted in places like Abu Dhabi, Jordan, Norway, and Budapest. Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and Rebecca Ferguson are among the cast members.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused a delay in the publication of Dune, which was originally planned for late 2020. Prior to its international release on September 15, 2021, the movie had its world premiere on September 3, 2021, at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. On October 22, 2021, it was made available in theaters and on HBO Max. Despite having a $165 million budget, Dune made $410 million. Both reviewers and viewers praised it for Villeneuve’s direction, narrative, cast performances, production values, costumes, Hans Zimmer’s music, visual effects, cinematography, and keeping important aspects of the original work. In addition to receiving multiple other honors, the movie was nominated in four other categories and took home six prizes at the 94th Academy prizes.
Plot
The Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV appoints Duke Leto Atreides to succeed Baron Vladimir Harkonnen as the lord of Arrakis, a hostile desert planet and the only source of “spice,” a lucrative psychoactive drug that bestows increased vitality and consciousness, in the far future. Additionally, Spice is essential for interstellar travel, enabling Spacing Guild Navigators to safely and instantly steer starships throughout space. Fearing Leto’s ascendancy, Emperor Shaddam plans for House Harkonnen to kill House Atreides and reclaim Arrakis with the covert help of his Sardaukar army. Leto is wary of the Emperor, but he balances the dangers against the authority of ruling Arrakis and forming a partnership with its enigmatic inhabitants, the Fremen.
Lady Jessica, Leto’s concubine, is an acolyte of the Bene Gesserit, a select sisterhood whose members are highly skilled both mentally and physically. They told her to have a daughter whose son would become the Kwisatz Haderach, a Bene Gesserit and messianic superbeing with the clairvoyance needed to lead humanity to a brighter future, as part of a centuries-long breeding program. Jessica rebelled and gave birth to a son, Paul, who receives Bene Gesserit punishments from Leto’s aids Duncan Idaho, Gurney Halleck, the Suk doctor Wellington Yueh, and the Mentat Thufir Hawat.
Paul shares concerning future visions with Jessica and Duncan. In order to evaluate Paul’s humanity and impulse control, the Reverend Mother and Imperial Truthsayer Gaius Helen Mohiam puts him through a lethal gom jabbar exam, which he passes.
Arrakeen, the main fortress of Arrakis, is reached by House Atreides. The Fremen have contacted Duncan’s advance party. She reveals that the reason why the locals honor Paul and Jessica is because the Bene Gesserit planted beliefs on Arrakis ages ago. A hunter-seeker effort to kill Paul is unsuccessful. Baron Harkonnen duplicitously agrees to Mohiam’s demand that he spare Paul and Jessica in his coup during a covert meeting on the Harkonnen planet Giedi Prime.
Leto meets and bargains with Stilgar, a Fremen chieftain, and Dr. Liet Kynes, a Fremen-born planetologist who serves as the Imperial Judge of the Change. They are briefed by Kynes on the perils of gathering spices and the enormous sandworms that travel beneath the desert and make it foolish to wear protective shields. Paul experiences severe premonitions after being exposed to the spice while they are rescuing a stranded spice-harvesting team from a sandworm during a flight.
By disabling Arrakeen’s shields, Yueh betrays the Atreides and permits Sardaukar and the Harkonnens to enter. In order to trade Leto for his wife, the Baron’s prisoner, he renders him incapable of surviving. To allow the Duke to kill the Baron, Yueh gives Leto a poison gas capsule in place of one of his teeth. Leto releases the gas, killing himself and the Baron’s Mentat, Piter De Vries, after the Baron betrays him and kills Yueh, but the Baron lives. A kind Yueh has left Paul and Jessica with a fremkit and survival supplies, despite the Baron’s plan to have them abandoned to perish in the middle of the desert. “The Voice” is a Bene Gesserit tactic that Jessica utilizes to subdue and murder their victims.
In order to recover the expense of the invasion, Baron Harkonnen assigns his nephew Rabban to rule Arrakis and gives him instructions to resume spice manufacturing. Duncan and Kynes discover Jessica and Paul in the meantime, and Paul reveals his intention to wed one of Emperor Shaddam’s daughters in order to prevent a civil war from breaking out as a result of the Emperor’s treachery. When Sardaukar troops with a lasgun find them, Duncan gives his life to allow Paul and Jessica to flee. In an attempt to flee as well, Kynes is apprehended and fatally injured. She then entices a sandworm to her location so it can eat her and the Sardaukar.
Paul and Jessica come across Stilgar’s Fremen tribe, which includes Chani, the young woman from Paul’s visions, deep in the desert. When Stilgar orders them to be lenient, the Fremen warrior Jamis opposes his authority and dares them to a death-defying ceremonial duel, which Paul accepts and prevails in. In defiance of Jessica’s desires, Paul enlists in the Fremen in order to carry out his father’s mission of establishing peace in Arrakis.
