Screenwriter Eric R. Roth was born in the United States on March 22, 1945. Forrest Gump (1994), The Insider (1999), Munich (2005), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), A Star Is Born (2018), and Dune (2021) are his six Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay. He won for Forrest Gump, and he was nominated for Best Picture for producing Mank (2020). Additionally, Roth wrote the screenplays for the Oscar-nominated movies Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011), and Ali (2001).
The son of Leon Roth, a university professor and film producer, and Miriam “Mimi,” a teacher, studio executive, and radio writer, Roth was born in New York City, New York, into a Jewish family. He was raised in Brooklyn, New York’s Bedford-Stuyvesant. He would attribute some of his subsequent accomplishments to habits he picked up from boxing as a child. Roth attended and graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1966. Later, he was a member of the class of 1973 at UCLA Film School.
