American film producer and former studio executive Mary Parent was born in 1968. Parent, a Santa Barbara, California native, attended the University of Southern California to study business before starting a modestly successful women’s fashion firm. She eventually entered the entertainment industry in the early 1990s after taking an entry-level position at a talent agency due to her love in movies.
Parent started her career as an executive at New Line Cinema, where she became vice president and assisted in the development of films including Pleasantville and Set It Off. Later, she became the senior vice president of production at Universal Pictures, where she was in charge of movies like 8 Mile (2002) and helped establish fruitful partnerships with directors like Judd Apatow. She was a co-founder of Universal’s Stuber/Parent producing firm in 2005.
Parent was appointed chairman and co-CEO of MGM in 2008, but he left the company soon after because of its financial difficulties. After that, she established Disruption Entertainment, landed a first-look agreement with Paramount Pictures, and produced movies like Noah (2014), Pacific Rim (2013), and The Revenant (2015), the latter of which was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. She came in at number 28 on The Wall Street Journal’s list of “50 Women to Watch 2008” that year.
Parent has been with Legendary Entertainment since 2016 as vice chairman of worldwide production. She has been in charge of big projects like Denis Villeneuve’s version of Dune (2021) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), which she has pushed for since 2013. Colleagues have commended Parent for her commitment to crafting stories and supporting filmmakers’ ambitions, and she is well-known for her ability to strike a balance between creative and budgetary goals.
