Actor Chang Chen was born in Taiwan on October 14, 1976. His most well-known films include Brotherhood of Blades (2014), The Assassin (2015), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Three Times (2005), Happy Together (1997), A Brighter Summer Day (1991), and The Soul (2021). He took home the 58th Golden Horse Awards’ Best Leading Actor honor for his role in The Soul.
Chang’s film career began early in life. Taiwanese filmmaker Edward Yang chose him to play the lead in the critically praised four-hour film A Brighter Summer Day, which took home the Special Jury Prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival. He accepted a part-time job at a film firm after the first movie and stayed there for two years until he received his high school diploma.
Happy Together (1997), directed by Wong Kar-wai, was one of Chang’s first roles. He became well-known for playing “Dark Cloud” in Ang Lee’s 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. He also appeared in 2046 (2004), directed by Wong Kar-wai.
Chang then costarred with Shu Qi in Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Three Times (2005), which received Golden Horse awards for Outstanding Taiwanese Film of the Year and was a contender for the Palme d’Or at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. Chang received a nomination for Best Leading Actor at the 42nd Golden Horse Awards for his role in that movie.
