TheatreJames Cameron, together with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, co-wrote the script for the next American epic science fiction picture Avatar: Fire and Ash. The three co-wrote the story with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. It is the third part in the Avatar film series and the follow-up to Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), both of which are produced and released by 20th Century Studios.
In addition to Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis playing new roles, the cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Kate Winslet, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, Matt Gerald, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, Filip Geljo, and Duane Evans, Jr. reprise their old roles.
The first two sequels were announced in 2010 after the success of the first film, with the then-untitled Avatar 3 aiming for a 2015 release. Cameron had previously mentioned in 2006 that he would like to develop sequels to Avatar (2009) if it was successful. But in order to give the crew more time to work on the narrative, pre-production, and visual effects, two more sequels (for a total of four) were added, and new technology was developed to film performance capture scenes underwater—a feat never previously achieved. On September 25, 2017, filming for Avatar: Fire and Ash began concurrently with Avatar: The Way of Water in New Zealand. After more than three years of filming, the project was finished in late December 2020.
The movie is supposed to be released on December 19, 2025, although there have been nine delays in its theatrical release, the most recent of which happened on August 9, 2024. Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, two further sequels, are currently in different stages of production and are anticipated to be released in 2029 and 2031, respectively.
The loss of Neteyam causes Jake and Neytiri’s family to struggle with grief a year after they moved in with the Metkayina Clan. As the battle on Pandora intensifies to disastrous proportions, they eventually come upon a new, hostile Na’vi tribe known as the Ash People, who are commanded by the fiery Varang, the tribe’s leader, who has sided with Jake’s adversary, Quaritch.
