Canadian director James Francis Cameron was born in New Zealand on August 16, 1954. A key figure in the post-New Hollywood era, his films have grossed over $8 billion worldwide, making him the second-highest-grossing film filmmaker of all time. He has won many awards and frequently combines cutting-edge technology with traditional filmmaking techniques. The Library of Congress has chosen three of his works for preservation in the National Film Registry, and he co-founded the production companies Lightstorm Entertainment, Digital Domain, and Earthship Productions.
Born in Kapuskasing, Cameron attended at Fullerton College, and then studied at the USC library. He originally became well-known for writing and directing The Terminator (1984), though he started his career with the short film Xenogenesis in 1978. Since then, he has had more success with films including Avatar (2009) and its follow-ups, Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), The Abyss (1989), Aliens (1986), and True Lies (1994). Titanic (1997), which he co-produced, co-edited, co-directed, and co-wrote, won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing at the Academy Awards. He has produced numerous movies about deep-ocean research, such as Ghosts of the Abyss (2003) and Aliens of the Deep (2005), and is also an explorer-in-residence for National Geographic.
In addition, Cameron helped develop the digital 3D Fusion Camera System and made contributions to remote vehicle and underwater shooting technology. Cameron became the world’s deepest man in 2012 when he used the Deepsea Challenger submersible to make the first solo plunge to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest section of the ocean. The top four highest-grossing movies of all time include three of Cameron’s productions: Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), and Titanic (1997). Avatar is the highest-grossing movie, while Avengers: Endgame (2019), which was directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, comes in second.
