Biography:
Joel Coen is an American director, writer, producer, and film editor known for his decades-long partnership with his brother, Ethan Coen. Being born on November 29, 1954, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, he got education in film at New York University and started his career in the movie industry afterward. The first feature-length movie of the Coen brothers was Blood Simple (1984), a neo-noir crime thriller that introduced the world to the unique style of the directors.
Following that, the brothers created a number of highly rated movies, among which are Raising Arizona (1987), Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), No Country for Old Men (2007), and True Grit (2010). These films featured dark humor, unusual characters, stylized cinematography, and genre experimentations.Joel and Ethan Coen were recognized with many prestigious awards throughout their career. Notably, the brothers won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay for No Country for Old Men, being its major artistic success.
In addition, their films Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and True Grit were widely recognized by the critics and were nominated for Oscars. Traditionally, during editing of their films, the brothers used the pseudonym “Roderick Jaynes”. As well, for their movies produced until 2004, Joel Coen got the only directorial credits because of the union restrictions. However, after a long collaboration, Joel started to direct independently The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand.
