Don Cheadle was born in Kansas City, Missouri, to teacher Bettye (née North) and clinical psychologist Donald Frank Cheadle Sr. He has two siblings, Cindy and Colin. His family relocated frequently during his childhood, and he attended Hartley Elementary in Lincoln, Nebraska, from 1970 to 1974. After graduating from East High School in Denver in 1982, where he was active in theater, choir, and the school jazz band, Cheadle pursued theater studies at the California Institute of the Arts, earning a BFA in 1986.
While at CalArts, he performed in numerous stage productions, including Athol Fugard’s Master Harold…and the Boys, The Island, and My Name Could Be Anne. His first screen credit came in Moving Violations (1985), which secured him a Screen Actors Guild card. Early television work included roles on Hill Street Blues (1987), Night Court (1988), and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990). His early film appearances included Hamburger Hill (1987), Colors (1988), and Boogie Nights (1997). He also had a recurring role on Picket Fences and starred in The Golden Palace.
Cheadle broke through with his acclaimed role as Mouse Alexander in Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), earning Best Supporting Actor honors from critics’ associations. He went on to star in Rebound: The Legend of Earl “The Goat” Manigault (1996), John Singleton’s Rosewood (1997), and Out of Sight (1998), his first of many collaborations with director Steven Soderbergh. His portrayal of Sammy Davis Jr. in The Rat Pack (1998) won him a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination. He continued to balance television and film, appearing in Traffic (2000), Mission to Mars (2000), Swordfish (2001), and the Ocean’s Eleven trilogy as Basher Tarr.
His television work included a memorable guest role on ER, which earned him an Emmy nomination. In 2005, his performance as Paul Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. That same year, he co-produced and starred in Crash, the Best Picture winner at the 2006 Oscars. Later work included Reign Over Me (2007), Traitor (2008), Hotel for Dogs (2009), and his directorial project Miles Ahead (2016), a biopic of jazz great Miles Davis, in which he also starred.
Cheadle joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2010, taking over the role of James “Rhodey” Rhodes / War Machine in Iron Man 2. He reprised the character in Iron Man 3, multiple Avengers films, Captain America: Civil War, Captain Marvel, and Disney+ series including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, What If…?, and Secret Invasion. He is set to headline the upcoming Marvel film Armor Wars.
On television, Cheadle led Showtime’s House of Lies (2012–2016), winning a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. He has also taken on diverse projects such as the crime thriller No Sudden Move (2021), Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021), and Peacock’s upcoming Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist (2024). In 2026, he will make his Broadway debut in a revival of David Auburn’s Proof.
Outside of acting, Cheadle is a committed humanitarian. He co-authored Not on Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond, co-founded the Not on Our Watch Project with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, and organized the “Ante Up for Africa” charity poker tournament. His advocacy earned him the BET Humanitarian Award (2007) and the Summit Peace Award from Nobel laureates.
Cheadle’s ancestry was explored on PBS’s African American Lives 2, revealing roots in Cameroon, Senegal to Liberia, Congo-Angola, and Nigeria/Benin. He has been married to actress Bridgid Coulter since 2020 after more than 28 years together, and they share two children.
