In Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu (at the time, part of Madras State), Kovai Sarala was born into a Malayali family. She became interested in acting after seeing MGR’s films. With the help of her sister and father, she finished her education and entered the film industry.
Film career:
She received her first film offer while she was in the ninth grade and appeared in the movie Velli Ratham starring Vijayakumar and K. R. Vijaya. In her second film, Mundhanai Mudichu, she played a 32-year-old pregnant woman while still in Class 10. Two years later, she played the 65-year-old mother of Bhagyaraj’s character in Chinna Veedu. She has made appearances in more than 300 films in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. As some of her personal favourites, she has named Sathi Leelavathi, Viralukketha Veekkam, Varavu Ettana Selavu Pathana, Karakattakkaran, and Viswanathan Ramamoorthy.
She has also contributed to television shows and series. She hosted the reality series Paasa Paravaigal and served as a frequent guest judge on Asatha Povathu Yaaru. She served as a judge on Vijay TV’s Tamil comedy competition programme “Comedyil Kalakkuvathu Eppadi” in 2013. She currently serves as a regular judge on Zed Tamil’s Tamil comedy programme “Varuthapadatha valibar sangam.” Hosting the children’s game show “Chellame Chellam” on Sun TV as well.
