Theatre“Puli,” originally titled “Komaram Puli,” is a 2010 Indian Telugu-language action thriller film written and directed by S. J. Suryah. The film stars Pawan Kalyan in the lead role and features Nikeesha Patel, Manoj Bajpayee, Saranya Ponvannan, Charan Raj, Nassar, and Ali in supporting roles. Notably, the film boasts a Telugu soundtrack by A. R. Rahman, marking his return to Telugu cinema after a considerable gap. The cinematography for the film was handled by Binod Pradhan. “Puli” was produced by Singanamala Ramesh Babu with a substantial budget of ₹40 crores and was distributed by Geetha Arts. The film hit theaters on September 10th.
Originally titled “Komaram Puli,” the movie underwent a name change to “Puli” on the second day of its release due to objections raised by Komaram Sony Rao, the grandson of the tribal legend Komaram Bheem, from whom the original title was derived. The film’s Nizam distribution rights were sold to Geetha Arts for a record ₹12 crores. While the soundtrack of the film became a chartbuster, unfortunately, “Puli” turned out to be a major disappointment in Pawan Kalyan’s career.
The storyline revolves around a woman searching for her missing husband, an honest police officer, who has encountered inhumane treatment from the local police. She discovers that a ruthless criminal named Saleem is responsible for her husband’s murder. In a desperate bid to escape from Saleem’s clutches, she takes refuge in a local temple and soon realizes she is pregnant with her husband’s child, whom she names Puli. Determined to make Puli a police officer, she sets out on this path.
The narrative takes a turn when terrorists target the Prime Minister of India during an event in Malaysia. Puli, now an I.P.S officer, heroically takes down the terrorists, saving the Prime Minister’s life and upholding the honor of the police force. He subsequently forms a special task force comprising honest and capable officers, equipped with advanced technology and distinctive uniforms, to maintain law and order effectively. Puli’s commitment to justice is further evident as he installs police phone booths outside police stations, charging just one rupee, to provide recourse for those who do not receive justice or face complacency from the police.
Amid these developments, a woman poses as S.I. Madhimati to win Puli’s heart, as he is determined to marry a female police officer. Although he initially falls for her, he eventually learns of her deceit.
Saleem, now a feared gangster operating alongside another criminal named Nikson, engages in various criminal activities, including illegal arms trade and money laundering. He eliminates police officers who do not cooperate with him or lures them with bribes. Many officers fear to take action against him, including ACP Ravi Kumar, who Puli convinces to reopen an old case against Saleem. However, due to lack of evidence, they face challenges.
As the story unfolds, Puli discovers that his team members are getting killed, and his secrets are being leaked. During a shootout, he identifies Nikson as a mole within his team and eliminates him. The confrontation between Saleem and Puli escalates when Saleem captures Puli’s mother. In a dramatic turn of events, Puli’s mother exposes Saleem’s crimes, leading to a confession broadcast live via a hidden camera. Puli succeeds in avenging his mother and bringing Saleem to justice.
