Saranya Ponvannan, an Indian actress, was born Sheela Christina. She primarily performs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and a few Kannada language films. She also appeared in the 2022 Hindi film Chup: Revenge of the Artist. Saranya made her acting debut in the 1987 film Nayakan by Mani Ratnam, where she played the lead part. From 1987 through 1996, she continued to play the lead. She made a comeback to movies in 2003 as a character actor after an eight-year hiatus. In the course of her more than 25-year career, she received numerous honors, including five South Filmfare Awards, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and one National Film Award.
Saranya made her Tamil film debut in 1987 as Kamal Haasan’s co-star in Mani Ratnam’s Nayakan. She made her film debut in Malayalam, Artham, the same year she made her Telugu debut in Neerajanam, 1989, with Mammootty. In 1996, practically at the very end of her lead acting career, she made her Kannada film debut in Appaji.
In 1996, she gave from acting. She made her television debut in the comedy series Veettukku Veedu Lootty in 2000 and went on to accept a few supporting roles in other productions. She made an appearance in the Sun TV family drama program Mugangal in 2006.
After taking a break from acting, she returned in the 2003 Tamil film Alai, playing the mother of Silambarasan opposite Raghuvaran. Since then, she has gained recognition for her “mother” characters, particularly in the mid-2000s films Raam, Thavamai Thavamirundhu, and Em Magan.
She received the National Film Award for Best Actress in 2010 for her portrayal of Veerayi, a widowed mother divided between love and possessiveness, in Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, her 100th release. Her most significant break came with the 2005 Tamil film Thavamai Thavamirundhu, which helped her establish herself as a well-known and important actor in South India. One of the top paid character actresses in the south Indian film business as of 2017 was her.
