TheatreVelraj made his directing debut with the 2014 Indian Tamil-language action comedy drama film Velaiilla Pattadhari, better known as VIP. Dhanush, who also plays the lead role alongside Amala Paul, Vivek, Saranya Ponvannan, Samuthirakani, and Surbhi, produced the film.
Velraj was replaced by Soundarya Rajinikanth as director of Velaiilla Pattadhari 2, which debuted in 2017. The movie centers on Raghuvaran “Raghu,” a recent graduate who is jobless, as he attempts to overcome several challenges both before and after landing a job.
Along with acting, producing, and releasing the project under the banner of Escape Artists Motion Pictures, Dhanush also served as the album’s producer and songwriter. Anirudh Ravichander wrote the soundtrack and album for the movie.This film’s stunt department was under the direction of Hari Dinesh.
Principal photography, which was mostly shot in Chennai, started in August 2013 and ended in May 2014. When the movie was released on July 18, 2014, critics gave it a favorable review. In Kannada, it was recreated as Brihaspathi (2018).
The story revolves around Raghuvaran (played by Dhanush), a civil engineering graduate who struggles to find employment despite his qualifications. His family, particularly his father (played by Samuthirakani), constantly nags him about getting a job and becoming independent. Raghuvaran’s frustration grows as he faces rejection after rejection from various companies.
However, luck finally smiles on Raghuvaran when he lands a job with a construction company run by an arrogant and wealthy businessman named Vasundhara Parameswaran (played by Amala Paul). Raghuvaran’s hard work and dedication impress Vasundhara, and she begins to respect him for his skills and integrity.
As Raghuvaran starts to excel in his job, he faces challenges from a rival company led by Arun Subramaniam (played by Vivek), who tries to sabotage Vasundhara’s projects to eliminate her competition. Raghuvaran becomes Vasundhara’s trusted aide and takes on Arun Subramaniam’s team in various construction challenges.
Amidst the professional challenges, Raghuvaran also navigates personal relationships, including his bond with his supportive mother and the evolving dynamics with Vasundhara, who starts to develop feelings for him.
The movie portrays Raghuvaran’s journey from being an unemployed graduate to a respected engineer, overcoming obstacles with determination and wit. It also touches upon themes of ambition, integrity, and the importance of perseverance in achieving one’s dreams.
“Velaiilla Pattadhari” was well-received for its engaging narrative, strong performances, and impactful dialogues, making it a significant film in Tamil cinema.
