The second season of the South Korean dystopian survival thriller Squid Game, known as Squid Game 2, was created by writer and producer Hwang Dong-hyuk. It premiered on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
The season features a cast including Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-wook, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-shim, and Jo Yu-ri. Set four years after Seong Gi-hun’s victory in the previous Squid Game, the story follows his decision to abandon plans to move to the United States and instead return to the deadly competition in an effort to put an end to it. Once again, he finds himself trapped in a high-stakes survival game alongside new players, all competing for a ₩45.6 billion prize. Meanwhile, a subplot follows Hwang Jun-ho, who enlists the help of mercenaries to track down Gi-hun.
Within 72 hours of release, the season amassed 68 million views, surpassing the previous Netflix premiere record of 50.1 million views set by Wednesday during its debut week. It also ranked No. 1 in 92 countries. While the season received generally positive reviews, critics considered it weaker than the first installment. The third and final season, filmed alongside season two, is set for release in 2025.
Plot
Episode-1
Seong Gi-hun leaves the airport terminal, determined to take down the Front Man behind the deadly games. Aware that he is being watched, he removes a tracking device implanted behind his ear.
Meanwhile, Hwang Jun-ho survives his fall from the cliff after being rescued by Park, a shrimp boat captain. Two years later, Gi-hun now lives frugally in a fortified hotel, hiring his former loan shark, Mr. Kim, and his gang to track down the games’ Recruiter in Seoul. Jun-ho, still a police officer, continues searching for the games’ island, often venturing out to sea with Captain Park, but remains unsuccessful.
Eventually, Kim and his associate, Choi Woo-seok, find the Recruiter, who is seen offering vagrants a choice between bread or a lottery ticket—most pick the losing ticket, after which he destroys the rejected bread in front of them. Jun-ho, recognizing Gi-hun, begins investigating him.
Kim and Woo-seok attempt to confront the Recruiter but are beaten, kidnapped, and forced into a deadly game of “rock-paper-scissors minus one” combined with Russian roulette, resulting in Kim’s death. Tracking the Recruiter to his base, Jun-ho closes in. Meanwhile, the Recruiter reveals his past to Gi-hun—he was once a soldier in the games who killed his own father, a player, and justifies the brutality by claiming the participants are “scum.” He then challenges Gi-hun to a round of Russian roulette, which ultimately leads to his own death.
Episode-2
Gi-hun, Jun-ho, and Woo-seok uncover a clue from the Recruiter’s jacket that leads them to a Halloween party. Woo-seok enlists a team of mercenaries, while Gi-hun implants a tracker in himself. The three develop a plan to track down the Front Man, though Jun-ho keeps a crucial secret—the Front Man is his brother, In-ho.
Meanwhile, Gi-hun continues to support Sang-woo’s mother and Cheol. He works with a broker to reunite Cheol with his mother from North Korea and makes a silent phone call to his estranged daughter.
At the Halloween party, the team infiltrates the event, and Gi-hun is taken by one of the pink-clad game soldiers into a limousine, with his team tailing him. Through a speaker, he directly confronts the Front Man, demanding an end to the games. However, when the vehicles following him are shot down, Gi-hun requests to re-enter the games as a player.
Meanwhile, Kang No-eul, a North Korean defector, works as a theme park mascot, hoping to bring her daughter to the South. She forms a bond with Na-yeon, a toddler battling blood cancer, whose father, Park Gyeong-seok, is a caricature artist at the park. One night, while sleeping in her car, No-eul receives a business card similar to the Recruiter’s and quits her job the next morning. As she leaves the park, she witnesses Na-yeon collapse and being rushed to a hospital with her father.
That evening, No-eul arrives at an isolated trailer park, along with several others, and officially enters the game—not as a player, but as a soldier.
Episode-3
Gi-hun wakes up in the game’s dormitory, surrounded by 455 other players. A manager announces a new rule—after each game, players will vote on whether to continue, and if the majority chooses to leave, the accumulated prize money will be evenly distributed.
Meanwhile, Jun-ho and his team lose track of the island after Gi-hun’s tracker is removed.
In the dormitory, Gi-hun recognizes Player 390, his friend Jung-bae, and advises him to stay close. The first game, Red Light, Green Light, begins, but when Gi-hun warns that elimination means death, many dismiss his warning. Despite the initial chaos and panic, his cautionary advice helps reduce casualties.
Player 230, a rapper known as “Thanos,” is under the influence of drugs and deliberately pushes other players, leading to more eliminations. Gi-hun and Player 120—Cho Hyun-ju, a transgender woman who entered the games to fund her gender-affirming surgery—try to save an injured but still alive eliminated player. However, No-eul, now a game soldier, shoots the injured player dead.
After the game, Gi-hun urges players to vote to end the games, revealing that he was the sole winner of a previous iteration. Players voting to continue are marked “O”, while those voting to leave are marked “X”. The Front Man, disguised as Player 001, casts the deciding vote, ensuring the game continues.
Episode-4
Player 001 pretends to form an alliance with Gi-hun, fabricating a story with partial truths about his reason for joining the game.
Meanwhile, Player 333, Myung-gi, is attacked by Thanos (Player 230) and Player 124, Nam-gyu. Player 001 steps in and easily stops the altercation. During this, Player 222, Kim Jun-hee, who is Myung-gi’s pregnant ex-girlfriend, reveals her identity to him.
At the same time, a group of soldiers, led by the Masked Officer, begins harvesting organs from eliminated players to sell on the black market. The Masked Officer orders No-eul to ignore the operation, but she refuses to comply.
Jun-ho, still searching for the truth, tries to enlist police help, but his efforts are unsuccessful.
To Gi-hun’s shock, the second game requires players to form teams of five for a six-legged pentathlon. This game consists of five traditional children’s games—ddakji, biseokchigi, gong-gi, spinning top, and jegi—all of which must be completed within five minutes.
Meanwhile, No-eul continues sabotaging the organ trade by shooting eliminated players dead, preventing their organs from being harvested.
Episode-5
After Hyun-ju’s team wins through mutual support, their success inspires other teams, leading many to succeed as well.
Gi-hun forms an alliance with Jung-bae, Jun-hee, Player 001, and Player 388 (Kang Dae-ho). Their team wins, and afterward, they exchange names. However, Player 001 falsely introduces himself as “Oh Young-il.”
Meanwhile, No-eul is attacked by two soldiers involved in the organ trade, who warn her to stop interfering with their operations.
During the next vote, ‘Young-il’ encourages the players to vote against continuing the game, but the majority still chooses to proceed, believing the prize pool is too small to quit.
Gi-hun, struggling with doubt, confides in Jung-bae about his uncertainty in being able to rescue everyone.
At the same time, Jun-ho and Woo-seok, now backed by an expanded mercenary team and Captain Park, continue searching for the island.
The third game, called “Mingle,” requires players to form groups based on an announced number and enter designated rooms accordingly.
Episode-6
During “Mingle,” players struggle to fit into rooms, leading to tension, betrayal, and the loss of allies.
In the fourth round, Hyun-ju’s ally, Young-mi, is knocked down while trying to enter a room. Hyun-ju attempts to save her, but Myung-gi takes the spot instead, closing the door and leaving Young-mi to die. This devastates Hyun-ju and the group, increasing tensions among them.
In the final round, Jung-bae witnesses Young-il kill another player to secure a room. After the game, Gi-hun and Young-il argue over persuading others to vote to end the games, but they ultimately decide against it to avoid conflict.
Jung-bae realizes that although “O” voters outnumber “X” voters, they only need seven “O” voters to change their decision for a majority. During the vote, several players, including Player 125 (Park Min-su), who has been subservient to Thanos and Nam-gyu, switch their votes to “X.” The seven necessary “O” voters also change to “X,” but one “X” voter reverses their vote after being influenced by Player 044, Seon-nyeo the shaman, becoming a devout follower of hers.
The final vote results in a tie, with Young-il casting the deciding vote. The players are given a day before a re-vote.
In the bathroom, Thanos and Nam-gyu pressure Min-su into changing his vote back to “O,” but Myung-gi and other “X” voters intervene to defend him. A fight breaks out, with Thanos strangling Myung-gi, who retaliates by stabbing Thanos in the neck with a metal fork, killing him.
Meanwhile, Jun-ho’s team locates a possible entrance on an island, only to discover it is a decoy rigged with explosives, leading to the death of one of the mercenaries.
Episode-7
Captain Park is revealed to be a double agent, having sabotaged Jun-ho’s team drone and killing its pilot.
In retaliation for Thanos’ death, Nam-gyu kills several “X” players, escalating the conflict.
After the bathroom brawl, players realize they can kill others to increase the prize pool and weaken the opposing voters. Gi-hun predicts a night attack by those wanting to continue the game but convinces a small group of “X” players to stay defensive, arguing that the true enemies are the game’s creators.
During the anticipated massacre, Gi-hun’s group remains hidden while others suffer heavy losses. They only emerge once the soldiers arrive.
Seizing an opportunity, Gi-hun’s group ambushes the soldiers, killing all but one and taking their firearms. They initiate a rebellion, forcing the surviving soldier to lead them to the control room.
However, more soldiers open fire en route, and the rebellion loses momentum as they run out of ammunition. Dae-ho, tasked with retrieving more ammo, suffers a combat stress reaction, rendering him unable to return.
Hyun-ju retreats to the dormitory, only to find Dae-ho cowered in a corner with the ammunition, just before guards enter the dorms.
In a shocking turn, Young-il betrays the group, killing two players and faking his death. Meanwhile, surrendering players are executed.
Gi-hun and Jung-bae are captured. In a final act of dominance, In-ho, now masked as the Front Man, executes Jung-bae in front of a horrified Gi-hun.
