Kamal Kamaraju is an Indian actor and writer known for his work in Telugu cinema. He holds a degree in architecture from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and is deeply passionate about the world of movies. Kamal is a versatile talent with skills as a writer, assistant art director, and an impressive painter. Additionally, he excels in photography and architecture, having contributed to creating the renowned restaurant ‘Moksha’ in Hyderabad, Telangana.
Born on 3 September 1981 in Sevagram, Maharashtra, Kamal comes from a Telugu family. His parents, Jawaharlal Kamaraju and Nirmala Gutta, have notable professional backgrounds, with his father retiring as an AGM in the esteemed NMDC company and his mother taking voluntary retirement from Markfed, a state organization. Kamal’s upbringing occurred in Hyderabad, where his elder brother, Kranthi Kiran, also resides.
Kamal’s name was inspired by his paternal grandmother, Kamala Devi, who hails from Razole in East Godavari district. His maternal grandparents were freedom fighters, and they wished for their daughter to give birth in a renowned Gandhian environment.
Having attended Little Flower High School in Hyderabad, Kamal developed a keen interest in art, theatre, and dance. This passion led him to pursue architecture at JNTU–School of Planning and Architecture (now Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University) in Hyderabad, where he successfully earned his bachelor’s degree.
On 6 October 2013, Kamal became engaged to Supriya Biswas, and their marriage occurred on 13 December 2013.
Kamal’s career began as an assistant art director under the guidance of renowned art director Ravinder for the film Anukokunda Oka Roju (2005), directed by Chandra Sekhar Yeleti. His acting journey commenced while working as an associate art director on the film Chhatrapati (2005), directed by S. S. Rajamouli, where he landed his first acting opportunity. However, his portrayal in Sekhar Kammula’s Godavari (2006) gained him recognition. Subsequently, he collaborated with Anish Kuruvilla on the independent film Confessions of a Film Actor (2007), which gained popularity overseas as one of the early pay-per-view releases.
Kammula, who recognized Kamal’s talent, launched him as a lead actor and produced the critically acclaimed Avakai Biryani (2008), directed by Anish Kuruvilla. This paved the way for Kamal to secure leading roles in other films such as Kalavaramaye Madilo (2009) and Virodhi (2011). He also made his foray into Tamil cinema with Ayiram Vilakku (2010), directed by Hosimin, where he portrayed a negative character.
