Gong Ji-cheol (Korean: 공지철), professionally known as Gong Yoo (공유), is a renowned South Korean actor born on July 10, 1979, in Busan, South Korea. He gained widespread fame for his leading roles in hit dramas such as Coffee Prince (2007) and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016–2017). He also appeared in global successes like Squid Game (2021–2024) and critically acclaimed films including Silenced (2011), Train to Busan (2016), and The Age of Shadows (2016).
Gong Yoo is the second child and only son of Gong Won and Yoo Myung-joo. His father, a former baseball manager, influenced his disciplined upbringing. He attended Dongin High School before pursuing a degree in Theater and Film at Kyung Hee University, where he graduated with a B.A. in Theater.
Genealogical records suggest Gong Yoo is a descendant of Confucius through the Gokbu Gong clan. However, his name is not listed in the official revision of Confucius’ family tree published in China in 2009.
Gong Yoo’s entertainment career began in 2000 as a video jockey on Mnet, followed by his acting debut in School 4 (2001). Over the next few years, he took on supporting roles in television dramas and movies, as well as hosting the music show Music Camp in 2004.
His first lead role came in Hello My Teacher (2005) opposite Gong Hyo-jin, followed by One Fine Day (2006). However, it was his performance in Coffee Prince (2007) that made him a Hallyu star, cementing his status as a leading actor.
Gong Yoo enlisted for mandatory military service on January 14, 2008, and was discharged on December 8, 2009. He spent eight months in frontline active duty in Cheorwon before transferring to the Defense Media Agency, where he worked in public relations and hosted an army radio show.
Following his service, he made a comeback with Finding Mr. Destiny (2010), which performed moderately at the box office. He later advocated for and starred in the film adaptation of Silenced (2011), which exposed real-life abuse cases and led to the passage of the Dogani Bill, strengthening laws against sexual crimes against minors and disabled individuals.
Gong Yoo continued diversifying his roles, starring in Kim Ji-young: Born 1982 (2019), a feminist drama that marked his third collaboration with Jung Yu-mi.
In 2021, he starred in the sci-fi action thriller Seo Bok alongside Park Bo-gum and made a special appearance as The Recruiter in Netflix’s Squid Game. His brief role in Season 2 (2024) was well received by fans.
Later in 2021, he led the Netflix sci-fi series The Silent Sea, playing an astronaut in a dystopian future. Despite mixed reviews, it topped Netflix’s global charts, and Forbes praised it as one of Netflix’s best sci-fi productions.
In 2024, he took on the lead role in The Trunk, a mystery melodrama based on a novel by Kim Ryeo-ryeong.
With a career spanning over two decades, Gong Yoo remains one of South Korea’s most influential actors. From romantic comedies to intense thrillers and social dramas, he has continuously reinvented himself, earning both critical acclaim and commercial success across multiple genres.
