Belawadi was born in Bangalore, in the former Mysore State (now Karnataka), from a family of theatre performers. His father, Belavadi Nanjundaiah Narayan, widely known as Makeup Nani (1929–2003), was a prominent figure in Kannada theatre who also made appearances in movies and worked as a make-up artist. His mother, Bhargavi Narayan, was a well-known theatrical and film performer. Additionally, Sujata, Sudha, and Pradeep, as well as his nieces and nephews, have diverse ties to theatre, music, television, and the movies. His primary education was finished at Mahila Seva Samaja, his secondary education at National High School, and his pre-university studies were completed at National College in Bangalore.In 1983, he graduated from University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Belawadi is one of the original founders of Citizens for Bengaluru, a platform for individuals to actively engage with the local government and hold it responsible for the needs of the people. Between 22 April, International Mother Earth Day, and 5 June, World Environment Day, Belawadi organises “Rotary Avani,” a yearly ecology festival in Bengaluru, to raise awareness of the environment and the Five Elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Sky so that individuals, as well as the government, industry, business, and citizens, can participate in initiatives to improve urban ecological health.
