Urvashi is an Indian actress, dubbing artist, television host, screenwriter, and producer best known for her work in the Malayalam and Tamil cinema industries of the South. She has won one National Film Award, five Kerala State Film Awards, three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and two Filmfare Award South throughout the course of a career spanning more than four decades. She is highly recognised as one of the best actors in Malayalam and Tamil film and is known for her distinctive acting technique. In the 1980s and 1990s, Urvashi was a well-known lead actress, mostly in Malayalam films. Both Pidakkozhi Koovunna Noottandu and Ulsavamelam, the latter of which she also produced, were authored by her. She received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2005 for her work in Achuvinte Amma, her first film in six years.Five times in all, she has received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress, including three straight victories from 1989 to 1991. Additionally, she has won two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.
She appeared in about 702 Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films. At the age of 10, she made her acting debut as Jayabharathi’s daughter in the Malayalam film Kathirmandapam, which was released in 1979. In the 1980 film Digvijayam, in which her sister Kalpana played Radha and she played Krishna in the song sequence Madhumaasa Nikunjathil, she played Srividya’s dance pupil. She also appeared in the 1983 Tamil film Ninaivukal Maraivathillai as a young artist, but the film was never released. Then, at the age of 13, she played Karthik’s love interest in the 1986 film Thodarum Uravu, which had its filming wrapped up in 1983. In 1983, K. Bhagyaraj’s Tamil film Munthanai Mudichchu, in which she played the lead role for the first time, was released. One of her first Malayalam films was Ethirppukal, which came out in 1984. Without accepting a single dime in payment, she acted in M. P. Sukumaran Nair’s critically acclaimed film Kazhakam in 1995, when her career was at its height. For this role, she received the Best Actress honour. She has performed in several theatre productions in addition to some commercials. She has starred in successful films alongside Kamal Haasan, including blockbusters that have become major hits in Tamil cinema. On Zed Kannada, she also hosted the Kannada programme Krazy Couple.
