Plot
After killing his brother-in-law, Rambabu fled from the police on the night of August 3, 2014, and Janardhan witnessed him leaving an under-construction police station and burying Varun’s body near the end of Drushyam. He tries to hide in his wife’s house and apologize to her, but he ends up getting jailed.
Rambabu, Jyothi, Anju, and Anu are leading rather regular lives six years later. Rambabu now owns a movie theater and is creating a film with acclaimed screenwriter Vinaya Chandra, having previously sold some land. Anju’s encounter with the cops left her with PTSD and seizures.
The rest of the town, envious of Rambabu’s wealth, says Anju led Varun on and spreads rumors about Rambabu and his family. As a result of her feelings of alienation from the rest of her family, Jyothi develops a close friendship with Saritha, a new neighbor who works as a government clerk and is frequently mistreated by her alcoholic husband Sanjay, a real estate broker.
Varun’s father, Prabhakar, begs Rambabu to give him his son’s remains so he can perform the last rites to comfort Geetha on the anniversary of Varun’s death, but Rambabu refuses, infuriating her. Jyothi objects, but Anu stays home over break and invites her friends over for a sleepover.
As a result of Rambabu’s continued lack of response to her worries, Jyothi spends more time with Saritha and unintentionally reveals that Anju killed Varun. She doesn’t realize that Sanjay and Saritha are undercover police officers sent by IGP N. Gowtham Sahu, Geetha’s buddy, who wants to get revenge on Geetha for the embarrassment the case caused the police. They had bugged the house.
As all of this is going on, Janardhan gets out of jail and decides to make amends with his divorced wife. Geetha and Prabhakar give him the money, which he takes to Gowtham after learning of Rambabu’s situation and a possible reward. After Janardhan shares what he witnessed, the police excavate the station floor and find a skeleton.
Observing this through the CCTV cameras he placed throughout the station, Rambabu braces himself for the worst. Rambabu’s family is called in for more interrogation by Gowtham, Geetha, and Prabhakar, but they stick to their alibi. But Geetha defeats them by playing a recording of Jyothi confessing to Sarita.
Anju has fits as a furious Geetha questions her about the case. In a state of desperation, Rambabu tells Gowtham that he killed Varun. The family is freed once the police are satisfied, but Gowtham plans to later trap them all. The following day, Rambabu is formally taken into custody by the police and put on trial for Varun’s murder.
After learning of this, Chandra visits Gowtham, Geetha, and Prabhakar and discloses that Rambabu wrote a screenplay for a movie that was partially based on the case. Chandra then published the script as a novel under her name, Drushyam, to give the narrative copyright protection.
Rambabu enters a not guilty plea and says the police compelled him to confess by using sequences from Drushyam, which made them realize it was all part of his plan. To everyone’s surprise, the results of the DNA tests also show that the body isn’t Varun’s. According to Chandra, Rambabu had a different ending in mind for his movie.
Seeing that his first scheme might not work, the hero quickly gets the remains of another young man who passed away from identical wounds by making friends with the undertaker of the cemetery where the other man’s body is interred.
After storing those remains for three years, he befriends a security guard at the nearby morgue by telling him he will play a part in the movie. The hero switches them before DNA samples are taken and covertly destroys the original body the night after it arrives at the morgue.
Due to a lack of proof, Rambabu is released on bail, and the police are temporarily forbidden from contacting the family. The judge summons Gowtham to his chambers, revealing that unresolved matters “are not new to the system” and ordering him to give up on the case.
Chandra tells Geetha and Prabhakar the story of Rambabu’s potential climax outside the courts, in which the hero would covertly give his parents’ ashes and accept his mistakes. Concurrently, Rambabu requests that Geetha and Prabhakar cease harassing his family and discreetly sends Varun’s ashes to them.
Gowtham persuades Geetha to forgive Rambabu, telling her that he would stop at nothing to keep his family safe, while Varun’s father performs the final ceremony. Gowtham adds that Rambabu’s existence is a form of punishment, requiring him to constantly avoid conflict with the law and live in fear. Observing the happenings from a distance, Rambabu departs solemnly.
