S. U. Arun Kumar, an Indian director and writer hailing from Paravai near Madurai, Tamil Nadu, made significant strides in the Tamil film industry, building his career through a series of impactful films.
His journey into filmmaking began with a keen interest that led him to create a few short films. Seeking to expand his repertoire, he participated in the second season of Nalaya Iyakunar, a TV competition focusing on short films, which served as a platform to enhance his skills and showcase his talent.
Arun Kumar marked his directorial debut in feature films with “Pannaiyarum Padminiyum” (2014), starring Vijay Sethupathi. The film initially stemmed from a short film but evolved into a full-length feature, retaining central characters while weaving an entirely new narrative. Despite receiving critical acclaim and gaining recognition at numerous international film festivals, the movie didn’t fare well commercially.
His collaboration with Vijay Sethupathi continued with “Sethupathi” (2016), driven by their shared aspiration to deliver a commercial success. The film received positive reviews and emerged as a box office hit. Its success prompted a Telugu remake titled “Jayadev.” Kumar and Sethupathi reunited once more for “Sindhubaadh” (2019), an undertaking that faced several casting challenges before finalizing the lead. Interestingly, Sethupathi’s son, Surya, made an appearance in the film, a decision met with initial reservations from the actor.
In 2020, Kumar ventured into documentary filmmaking with “Imaikka Vizhigal,” focusing on the chain snatching issue in Tenkasi. Serving as its writer, director, and cinematographer, he delved into a different form of storytelling.
Continuing his directorial journey, Kumar’s latest work, “Chithha” (2023), starring Siddharth, garnered critical acclaim upon its release. The film, which hit screens on September 28, 2023, made a notable impact within the industry, further cementing Kumar’s position as a director with a knack for engaging storytelling and impactful cinema.
