Sadhana Sargam, born on March 7, 1969, in Dabhol, Maharashtra, India, is an acclaimed Indian playback singer known for her versatile work in Hindi, Bengali, and Tamil cinema. Born into a musical Marathi family, her mother, Neela Ghanekar, was a classical singer and music teacher, which helped shape Sadhana’s early exposure to music. She showed remarkable talent at a young age, participating in music festivals and performing in various events.
Her musical journey began with a children’s chorus in the song “Pam Pararampam, Bole Jeevan Ki Sargam” sung by Kishore Kumar in the film “Trishna” (1978). She displayed her exceptional talent by singing “Ek Anek Aur Ekta” for Doordarshan at the age of 6. Sadhana’s formal training included seven years under Pandit Jasraj after she won a Central Government scholarship at age 10.
She stepped into playback singing with “Kanku Pagli,” a Gujarati film, and her debut Hindi song was “Door Nahin Rehna” from the delayed release “Rustom.” However, her first released film was “Vidhaata” (1982), where she sang “Saat Saheliyan.”
Her breakthrough came with the song “Har Kisiko Nahin Milta” from “Janbaaz” (1986), gaining her recognition. Subsequently, she lent her voice to various films like “Khudgarz” and “Khoon Bhari Maang,” collaborating with renowned composers like Kalyanji-Anandji, R.D. Burman, and Anu Malik.
