Biography:

Girish Gangadharan ISC, born on 8 March 1985, is an esteemed Indian cinematographer recognized for his contributions to both Malayalam and Tamil films. His remarkable work has garnered him the National Film Award for Best Cinematography for the acclaimed 2019 film “Jallikkattu,” directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery. This film was India’s official entry to the Oscars that year. Additionally, Girish Gangadharan has lent his cinematographic skills to blockbuster Tamil films such as “Sarkar” and “Vikram.”

Girish embarked on his journey by completing his cinematography education at the Government Film and Television Institute in Bengaluru in 2008. After graduating, he gained experience by assisting Sameer Thahir. His debut as an independent cinematographer was marked by Sameer Thahir’s directorial debut, “Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi” in 2013. Notable works in his repertoire include “Guppy” (2016), “Angamaly Diaries” (2017), “Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil” (2018), and “Jallikattu” (2019). His profile gained national attention for his intricate work, particularly the 11-minute single-long take in the climax of “Angamaly Diaries,” a feat he also replicated in “Jallikattu.”

Girish Gangadharan’s talent was acknowledged with the Kerala State Film Award – Special Mention for “Guppy” in 2016. Subsequently, in 2021, he secured the prestigious National Film Award for Best Cinematography for his outstanding work in “Jallikattu.” His cinematic journey underscores his skill in capturing breathtaking visuals and his ability to contribute to the storytelling process through his distinctive cinematographic perspective.
