NetflixLauren Schmidt Hissrich created the fantasy drama television series The Witcher on Netflix. It is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series, The Witcher tells the story of Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg, and Princess Ciri on a made-up, medieval-inspired landmass called the Continent. Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan play Geralt alongside Henry Cavill and Liam Hemsworth.
On December 20, 2019, the eight-episode first season, which starred Cavill, was made available on Netflix. The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, two anthologies of short stories that come before the main Witcher story, served as its inspiration. On December 17, 2021, the second season, which likewise had eight episodes and was based on the book Blood of Elves, debuted. On June 29 and July 27, 2023, the third season—which likewise has eight episodes and is based on the book Time of Contempt—was released in two volumes.
Based on the novel Baptism of Fire, which debuted on October 30, 2025, Hemsworth assumed the role of Geralt of Rivia in the fourth season, which likewise consisted of eight episodes. The show received a renewal for its fifth and last season in April 2024.
Nightmare of the Wolf, an animated origin narrative movie, debuted on August 23, 2021. On December 25, 2022, a prequel miniseries called Blood Origin debuted. Sirens of the Deep, a second animated movie, came out on February 11, 2025. October 30, 2025 saw the premiere of The Rats: A Witcher Tale, a feature-length special.
Geralt of Rivia, Crown Princess Cirilla of Cintra, and the quarter-elf sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg all appear at different points in time at the start of the story. Throughout the first season, these characters are shaped by formative events that eventually merge into a single timeline.
Since he unintentionally demanded Ciri as payment for his services by using “the Law of Surprise” before she was even born, Geralt and Ciri have been bound by fate. When the two eventually cross paths, Geralt takes on the role of the princess’s defender. He must aid her and battle her many assailants in order to keep Ciri and their world safe and stop her Elder Blood and potent magic from being utilised for evil.
