Theatre“Thalaivaa,” an Indian Tamil-language action thriller film released in 2013, was written and directed by A. L. Vijay. The film features popular actor Vijay in the titular role and was produced by Chandraprakash Jain. G. V. Prakash Kumar composed the background score and soundtrack, while Nirav Shah handled cinematography, and Anthony took care of editing duties. The storyline revolves around a dancer who unexpectedly finds himself thrust into the world of crime after his father, a crime boss, is killed. The film also boasts an ensemble cast, including Ragini Nandwani, Amala Paul, Sathyaraj, Santhanam, and Abhimanyu Singh, among others.
Production for “Thalaivaa” commenced in November 2012 in Mumbai, with the movie finally releasing on 8 August 2013, coinciding with Eid-ul Fitr. The film received largely positive reviews from both critics and audiences alike, particularly overseas. It also performed well in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka. However, its release in Tamil Nadu was delayed until 20 August 2013 due to opposition from the ruling AIADMK party, led by the then-Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. This delay in its home state had an impact on the film’s performance at the Tamil Nadu box office.
The plot of “Thalaivaa” spans two timelines. In 1988, a riot in Bombay leads to a tragic incident that compels Ramadurai to leave for Madras with his son Vishwa. This sets the stage for Vishwa’s upbringing and eventual journey into the world of crime. In 2013, Vishwa, now living in Sydney, is a dancer who manages a water distribution business with his childhood friend Logu and his dance team members. As he falls in love with Meera, the daughter of a restaurateur, and builds a life in Sydney, he remains unaware of his father’s true profession.
However, events take a dramatic turn when Meera and her father, both Crime Branch officers, lure Vishwa to Mumbai to arrest Ramadurai. Vishwa discovers his father’s criminal background and the ploy to capture him. After Ramadurai’s arrest and tragic death due to a bomb explosion, Vishwa decides to take over his father’s syndicate, adopting the title of Thalaivaa. He becomes a vigilante figure, providing justice for the marginalized and fighting for their rights. The film unfolds with Vishwa’s quest for justice, including his efforts to expose Bhima, his arch-enemy, and the corrupt Chief Minister. The movie ultimately culminates in a gripping climax with Vishwa eliminating Bhima and marrying Meera.
“Thalaivaa” weaves an intricate narrative of crime, justice, and personal sacrifice, while also showcasing Vijay’s charismatic performance in the lead role.
