Nirav Shah

Biography:

Nirav Shah, born on 16 November 1974, is an Indian cinematographer known for his work in Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam cinema. He debuted as an independent cinematographer with the 2004 Hindi film Paisa Vasool. Before that, he worked as an assistant to renowned cinematographers and gained experience in television advertisements, music videos, and short films.

Nirav Shah’s breakthrough came with the blockbuster Hindi film Dhoom in 2004, which garnered him recognition, fame, and critical acclaim. His success led to opportunities in the Tamil film industry, and he made his Kollywood debut with the 2005 action film Sandakozhi, directed by Linguswamy. Director Vishnuvardhan then collaborated with Shah on several films, including Pattiyal (2005), Arinthum Ariyamalum (2005), Billa (2007), and Sarvam (2008), establishing a highly acclaimed partnership in the Tamil film industry.

Shah also worked on Bollywood films such as Banaras and the sequel to Dhoom in 2006, receiving further accolades and awards. He was approached by Prabhu Deva for the Vijay-starrer Pokkiri (2007) and by the director-duo Pushkar-Gayathri for their debut film Oram Po (2007). Despite an invitation to work on Shankar’s Enthiran, Shah had committed to Vishnuvardhan’s Sarvam and couldn’t take up the opportunity.

In addition to his cinematography career, Nirav Shah has plans to venture into film direction and is set to direct a movie produced by actor Arya. He is also involved in developing India’s largest film studio in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Shah’s exceptional work has earned him nominations at the National Award for Best Cinematographer for three films: Banaras (Hindi), Pattiyal (Tamil), and Dhoom 2 (Hindi). He received the Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Cinematographer for the film Billa (Tamil).
