Anuya Y Bhagwat is a former Indian actress known for her appearances in Tamil films, with her standout performance in the romantic comedy “Siva Manasula Sakthi” (2009) being one of her career highlights.
Starting her film career, Anuya made her debut in the Hindi children’s film “Mahek,” directed by Kranti Kanade. The film received critical acclaim and premiered at the London Film Festival, even earning nominations at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival, including Best Picture. However, it was her next film, “Siva Manasula Sakthi,” directed by Rajesh, that catapulted her to fame. In this romantic comedy, she played the titular role alongside Jiiva. An interesting fact is that, before the film’s release, she had a narrow escape from a terror attack while staying at a Mumbai hotel.
Following her success, Anuya worked on “Madurai Sambavam” (2009), a film directed by Youreka, which was made on a smaller budget and set in the backdrop of Madurai. Her portrayal of a deglamorized character, a fiendish cop who falls for a rowdy, earned her critical acclaim. This performance led to her securing roles in films like “Nagaram” opposite Sundar C, as well as smaller roles in Vijay Antony’s “Naan” (2012) and a promotional song in “Nanjupuram” (2011). She did a cameo in S. Shankar’s “Nanban” but expressed her intention not to take up such roles in the future. Anuya briefly ventured into Bengali films, making her debut in a film titled “Gora,” based on Rabindranath Tagore’s novel of the same name. She later appeared in the Doordarshan TV series “Ek Tha Rusty” (2014), where she played the role of Maharani.
In 2017, Anuya Y Bhagwat participated in the first season of Bigg Boss Tamil, although she was the first contestant to be evicted. She later revealed that her limited fluency in Tamil had made it challenging for other contestants to accept her presence on the show. This marked another interesting chapter in her career, showcasing her willingness to explore different facets of the entertainment industry.
