Biography:

Mani Ratnam, born Gopalaratnam Subramaniam on June 2, 1956, stands as a luminary in Indian cinema, revered for his directorial prowess, screenwriting finesse, and producing acumen across Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films. His illustrious career is peppered with six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards, and an array of accolades from various international film festivals. In 2002, the Padma Shri, India’s prestigious civilian honor, was conferred upon him, acknowledging his monumental contributions to the film industry.

Despite hailing from a family entrenched in film, Ratnam initially harbored no inclination towards the industry. Following his post-graduation in management, he embarked on a consulting career. His entry into cinema materialized through the 1983 Kannada film, “Pallavi Anu Pallavi.” Initial setbacks in his subsequent ventures left him with limited opportunities until the breakthrough success of “Mouna Ragam” in 1986 solidified his stature as a prominent filmmaker in Tamil cinema. His directorial prowess shone through critically acclaimed works like “Nayakan” (1987), “Anjali” (1990), and “Thalapathi,” as well as commercial hits like “Roja” (1992), “Bombay” (1995), “Dil Se..” (1998), and the romantic trilogy of “Mouna Ragam” (1986), “Alaipayuthey” (2000), and “O Kadhal Kanmani” (2015).

Ratnam’s cinematic revolution in Tamil cinema encompasses a distinctive style, characterized by visually captivating songs and unique lighting techniques. His exploration spans genres, delving into romance, terrorism, war, and drama, each film embodying its own narrative and visual aesthetic.

His recent foray into epic historical dramas, “Ponniyin Selvan: I” (2022) and “Ponniyin Selvan: II” (2023), based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s revered literary work, further cemented his position with critical acclaim and substantial box office success.

Born into a Tamil Brahmin family deeply connected to the film industry, Ratnam was raised in Madras (now Chennai), where despite familial ties to film, watching movies was initially discouraged. His fascination with cinema burgeoned during his schooling years and continued through his collegiate education, culminating in a commerce degree from Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College and an MBA in finance from Mumbai’s Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.

In 1988, Ratnam married actress Suhasini, and the couple resides in Alwarpet, Chennai, where he oversees his production company, Madras Talkies. However, his career and personal life were not without tumult; in 1995, he faced an attack on his home, believed to be orchestrated by Muslim extremists opposing his film “Bombay.”

In 2019, Ratnam found himself entangled in controversy when he and 49 others faced legal repercussions for addressing concerns about communal violence against minorities, including Muslims, Christians, and Dalits, during the tenure of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.

Throughout his journey, Mani Ratnam has not only shaped the cinematic landscape but also weathered personal and professional challenges, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema.
