TheatrePonniyin Selvan: I is a Tamil-language epic action drama directed by Mani Ratnam, co-written with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. Produced by Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah under Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions, it’s the first of two parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel.
The ensemble cast includes Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Karthi, Jayaram, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prakash Raj, Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, R. Parthiban, Rahman, Lal, and Vikram Prabhu. A. R. Rahman composed the music, Ravi Varman handled cinematography, A. Sreekar Prasad edited, and Thota Tharani managed production design.
Ponniyin Selvan: I portrays the early life of Chola prince Arunmozhi Varman, who later becomes Emperor Rajaraja I (947–1014). The plot follows Vandiyathevan’s journey across Chola land to deliver a message from crown prince Aditha Karikalan, amidst political unrest managed by Kundavai as vassals and chieftains conspire against the throne.
Since its publication, various Tamil filmmakers had considered adapting Ponniyin Selvan, but faced financial challenges. Shot across India with some scenes in Thailand, the film was originally planned as a single release but split into two parts.
Released worldwide on 30 September 2022, Ponniyin Selvan: I garnered positive reviews and grossed ₹450–500 crore globally, the third-highest-grossing Indian film of that year. It’s currently the fourth highest-grossing Tamil film ever. The film received six nominations at the 16th Asian Film Awards, including Best Film. The sequel, Ponniyin Selvan: II, continuing the story, was released on 28 April 2023.
