K. Shivashankar, born on 7 December 1948 in Chennai’s Govindappa Naicken Street, Parrys, was a prominent Indian dance choreographer renowned for his work in numerous languages, particularly within the realm of South Indian cinema, encompassing Tamil and Telugu films.
During his formative years, Shivashankar faced a significant accident that resulted in a fractured backbone. Raised mainly by his aunts due to his recovery, he grew up with feminine mannerisms due to limited exposure to the outside world and predominant female care. He pursued education at Hindu Theological Higher Secondary School, Sowcarpet, and his introduction to dance transpired through representing his father at dance festivals, a role he embraced passionately.
Shivashankar embarked on a prolific career as a choreographer, contributing to more than 800 feature films. His remarkable choreography was recognized with accolades, including the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Choreographer for notable movies such as “Poove Unakkaga” (1996), “Vishwa Thulasi” (2003), “Varalaru” (2006), and “Uliyin Osai” (2008). He achieved even greater acclaim when he won the National Film Award for Best Choreography for his innovative work in S. S. Rajamouli’s “Magadheera” (2008), specifically lauded for the song “Dheera Dheera Dheera.”
Beyond his choreography expertise, Shivashankar took on acting roles, notably portraying Ajith Kumar’s dance instructor in K. S. Ravikumar’s “Varalaru” (2006), where he contributed not only to dance sequences but also to Ajith’s overall physical portrayal. He further displayed his versatility by playing a Christian missionary in Bala’s “Paradesi” (2013).
Tragically, K. Shivashankar passed away due to COVID-19 on 28 November 2021 at the age of 72, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of Indian cinema and dance.
