TheatreGaayam is a 1993 Telugu-language political crime thriller inspired by the gang violence in Vijayawada during the 1980s. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma and co-written with Mani Ratnam, the film features Jagapathi Babu, Revathi, and Urmila Matondkar in lead roles, with music composed by Sri.
The film was both a critical and commercial success upon release and went on to win six Nandi Awards in 1993. It was also dubbed into Tamil under the title Desam.
Gaayam draws inspiration from the 1972 Hollywood classic The Godfather, which itself was adapted from Mario Puzo’s 1969 novel of the same name.
Plot
The film opens with Durga, a feared crime lord who takes justice into his own hands, helping those failed by the legal system. When a man complains to Durga that his daughter was molested, Durga violently punishes the culprits. A new police officer, Bharadwaj, arrests Durga but releases him shortly after. During this time, Durga spots his former lover, Anitha, which brings back memories of their college romance. Back then, Anitha was an idealistic journalism student, while Durga was the younger brother of gangster Mohana Krishna. She agreed to marry him only if he promised never to follow his brother’s criminal path, which he did.
Tragedy strikes when Gurunarayana, a corrupt corporator and Mohana Krishna’s enemy, has him assassinated for political gain. In retaliation, Durga kills those responsible and rises to power, effectively controlling the city. However, Sarkar, one of the culprits, escapes from prison with help from political forces. Disillusioned by Durga’s descent into crime, Anitha ends their relationship. She eventually marries Bharadwaj and becomes a bold journalist, committed to exposing injustice. Gurunarayana, now an MLA, continues to grow in power, while Durga’s cousin Chitra harbors unspoken feelings for him.
As Durga eyes a political future, Gurunarayana schemes to stop him by freeing Sarkar. This escalates the rivalry. Sarkar later launches a deadly attack on Durga in a theater, killing many and deeply affecting Anitha. She meets Durga to persuade him to change, but he refuses. She eventually confesses her past with Durga to her husband, Bharadwaj.
Durga tracks Sarkar and nearly kills him but halts on seeing Bharadwaj. Meanwhile, Anitha interviews Gurunarayana about the theater attack. Sarkar arrives at Gurunarayana’s home during the interview, prompting Bharadwaj to chase him. A confrontation ensues between Bharadwaj and Gurunarayana. Anitha tries to report the truth, but her editor suppresses it.
Gurunarayana then kidnaps Chitra, framing Durga in a crime to neutralize him. Bharadwaj attempts to present a witness to clear Durga, but Gurunarayana has the witness killed. Enraged, Bharadwaj arrests Durga.
Gurunarayana then orchestrates mass riots, hoping to collapse the government and become Chief Minister. During the chaos, Bharadwaj clashes with Gurunarayana’s men and even slaps him publicly. Meanwhile, Anitha records evidence of Gurunarayana’s misdeeds but her editor betrays her by handing it over to Gurunarayana.
In a final ploy, Gurunarayana plans a fake bomb blast during the Ganesh immersion festival to gain public sympathy. The police receive intelligence about the plan and release Durga to help stop it. Gurunarayana also threatens to kill Bharadwaj, prompting Anitha to seek Durga’s help once more.
At the festival, Sarkar sets up the bomb from inside a movie theater. Durga and Bharadwaj locate and thwart him. Gurunarayana tries to execute the plan himself, but the bomb detonates safely without casualties. Sarkar is killed, and Gurunarayana is injured and later sentenced.
In the end, Anitha expresses her gratitude to Durga, who chooses to leave his violent past behind and embrace a new beginning.
