TheatreGuru is a Hindi-language drama film directed and co-written by Mani Ratnam, featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Mithun Chakraborty, R. Madhavan, and Vidya Balan. The film’s music was composed by A. R. Rahman.
Guru, an ambitious man, along with his wife, leaves his small village behind to pursue his dream of opening his own business. There was speculation that the film was a biopic of industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani, but Ratnam denied these rumors, stating that it was a work of fiction.
Guru was released on 12 January 2007, with its premiere held at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto, Canada, on 11 January 2007. This event marked the first time an Indian film had a mainstream international premiere in Canada. Roger Nair Productions acquired the Canadian rights and organized the premiere, with most of the cast and crew attending.
The film was also showcased in the “Tous Les Cinemas du Monde” (World Cinema) section at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Additionally, Guru was dubbed and released in Tamil under the same title and in Telugu as Gurukanth.
