Story:

Roja is a Tamil-language romantic thriller film directed and written by Mani Ratnam, featuring Arvind Swamy and Madhoo (credited as Madhubala) in the lead roles, with Madhoo playing the title character. The story centers on a village girl from Tamil Nadu who makes desperate efforts to locate her husband after he is abducted by militants during a covert mission in Jammu and Kashmir.

Produced by K. Balachander under Kavithalayaa Productions and distributed by G. Venkateswaran, the film’s cinematography was done by Santhosh Sivan, with music composed by A. R. Rahman in his debut, and editing by Suresh Urs. Roja was released on 15 August 1992, and received positive reviews, particularly for its patriotic themes and acclaimed soundtrack. It was showcased in the Indian panorama section at the 24th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

Roja earned three National Film Awards, including Best Film on National Integration, establishing Mani Ratnam’s reputation on a national level. The film also received international recognition, being nominated for Best Film at the 18th Moscow International Film Festival. It was re-released globally in response to increasing concerns about terrorist attacks worldwide. Roja is the first film in Mani Ratnam’s trilogy, followed by Bombay (1995) and Dil Se.. (1998), exploring human relationships against the backdrop of Indian politics.

A. R. Rahman made his debut as a film composer with Roja, winning the National Film Award for Best Music Direction, the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director – Tamil, and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Director for his work.
