TheatreSaathiya is a Hindi-language romantic drama film directed by Shaad Ali and produced by Mani Ratnam and Yash Chopra under the banners of Yash Raj Films and Madras Talkies. It is a remake of the Tamil film “Alaipayuthey,” with its climax inspired by the English film “Sliding Doors” (1998). The film stars Rani Mukerji and Vivek Oberoi in the lead roles, supported by Sandhya Mridul, Tanuja, Swaroop Sampat, Satish Shah, Sharat Saxena, and Kunal Kumar.
The story revolves around Aditya and Suhani, who elope and marry despite their parents’ opposition. Their happiness is short-lived as tragedy strikes. The film’s soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics by Gulzar. Anil Mehta handled the cinematography, and A. Sreekar Prasad edited the film.
Released on 20 December 2002, “Saathiya” received critical acclaim for its performances and screenplay. The film was a commercial success, earning ₹291 million (US$3.5 million) and becoming the eighth highest-grossing film of the year.
“Saathiya” garnered several accolades. At the 48th Filmfare Awards, it received 8 nominations and won 6 awards, including Best Actress – Critics for Rani Mukerji, Best Screenplay for Mani Ratnam, and Best Male Playback Singer for Sonu Nigam for the song “Saathiya.”
